Traditional Chinese Medicine
The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in 1954. At that time, it was one of the hospital’s more than ten core departments and one of the earliest departments of traditional Chinese medicine established among the comprehensive hospitals in the capital. After more than 70 years of development, the department has formed a medical team with strong professional and technical expertise and a well-structured academic hierarchy. It currently has 37 medical and nursing staff members, including 1 doctoral supervisor and 6 master’s supervisors; 6 chief physicians and 6 deputy chief physicians. The team includes 1 postdoctoral fellow, 15 doctors, and 14 master’s degree holders.
Today, the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine has become a model department for integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, characterized by a high level of clinical diagnosis and treatment, prominent advantages in specialized diseases, strong research capabilities, and high recognition among patients. At present, the department has 5 national-level high-caliber medical talents and 8 municipal-level key medical talents, including outstanding representatives such as Young Qihuang Scholars, recipients of the China Youth Science and Technology Award, and renowned senior traditional Chinese medicine physicians in Beijing. It undertakes key research projects under the National Key Research and Development Program and major and key municipal projects. It has published more than 200 academic papers, obtained 1 authorized US invention patent, 8 authorized invention patents, 2 utility model patents, and 3 software copyrights; led the formulation and publication of 2 diagnostic and treatment standards or specifications; edited the first Chinese textbook, An Introduction to Intelligent Traditional Chinese Medicine; and received 9 national and provincial/ministerial awards, including the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.
Relying on a pilot institution for the national integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine collaboration “flagship” hospital and the Beijing Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine specializes in precision diagnosis, treatment, and clinical research for the prevention and treatment of chronic, major, complex, and difficult diseases through integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. It has established an intelligent management system for integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine based on “evidence-based optimization–precise pattern differentiation–intelligent empowerment,” created a dual-linked diagnosis and treatment system connecting “outpatient services–wards” and “hospitals–communities,” and promoted the department’s transformation from a disease-treatment-focused model to a model integrating treatment and prevention. It has developed practical strengths in sleep and pain, digestive diseases, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, cancer rehabilitation, metabolic diseases, and overwork-related subhealth conditions. Through the diligent cultivation and orderly inheritance of several generations of Friendship traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, a distinctive diagnosis and treatment system integrating the three dimensions of “internal and external combination,” “acupuncture and medication combination,” and “integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine” has gained an excellent reputation among patients.
