Oncology
The Department of Oncology was established in 2010 under the leadership of Professor Cao Bangwei and was officially integrated and developed into an Oncology Center in 2016. After more than a decade of development, it has become a specialized oncology diagnosis and treatment platform integrating clinical care, research innovation, talent development, and public welfare services. Relying on standardized comprehensive diagnosis and treatment, distinctive technology applications, and clear disciplinary strengths, it has built a professional reputation in regional oncology diagnosis and treatment and has won wide recognition from patients and their families.
The Department of Oncology operates across three hospital campuses—Xicheng, Tongzhou, and Shunyi—with a total of 80 beds. It has a comprehensive complement of diagnostic and treatment equipment, including equipment capable of delivering specialized technologies such as tumor hyperthermia and radiotherapy, providing solid equipment support for distinctive clinical diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, leveraging the hospital’s integrated platform advantages, it works closely with the Departments of Surgery, Gynecology, Radiation Oncology, Interventional Medicine, and others to establish a multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment system.
In clinical diagnosis and treatment, the department focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of various malignant tumors throughout the body, including lung cancer, gastric cancer, breast cancer, esophageal cancer, colorectal cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, liver cancer, and malignant tumors of the head and neck. Taking into account individual differences such as patients’ physical condition and disease stage at diagnosis, it develops individualized, precise treatment strategies that are multidisciplinary and multisystemic, effectively prolonging survival and improving quality of life for patients with advanced disease. The department actively explores and incorporates the latest clinical research findings and works closely with Head and Neck Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, General Surgery, and other departments. It has achieved results and accumulated experience in reducing the extent of surgical resection and preserving organ function, greatly improving the quality of life of patients with head and neck tumors and rectal cancer. In addition, as the National Clinical Trial Research Center for Anticancer Drugs, the department has led and participated in more than 60 domestic and international multicenter clinical trials of novel oncology drugs and plans to conduct NK-cell immunotherapy. Its research covers multiple cancer types, including lung cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colorectal cancer, as well as areas such as cancer pain and bone metastases, giving patients the opportunity to access world-class medical services and innovative treatment options.
In research innovation, the department has carried out in-depth studies of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, and resistance mechanisms in malignant tumors. It conducts screening and functional studies of drug-resistance genes in common malignant tumors such as lung cancer, breast cancer, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer, while also exploring frontier areas involving artificial intelligence and tumor diagnosis and treatment. Related research has received support from national- and provincial/ministerial-level projects. The department’s team has undertaken 10 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 6 projects funded by the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, 4 Capital Health Development Research Special Projects, and 1 Capital Clinical Characteristic Application Research project, among many other national- and municipal-level research funding projects. It is also a member institution of the Ministry of Science and Technology’s 973 and 863 projects. Its research achievements continuously promote the optimization and upgrading of clinical diagnosis and treatment technologies, as well as the research, development, and application of innovative drugs, medical devices, and new diagnosis and treatment protocols.
The department has a well-structured talent pipeline and outstanding professional capabilities. It currently has 6 chief physicians, 2 associate chief physicians, 2 attending physicians, 7 resident physicians, 3 doctoral supervisors, and 2 master’s supervisors. Core team members hold important positions in several national oncology professional societies, and the department is the chairing institution of the Oncology Department of Capital Medical University and the vice-chairing institution of the Beijing Medical Association. As an authorized site for awarding doctoral and master’s degrees in oncology at Capital Medical University and a Beijing standardized residency training base for oncology, the department undertakes the education and training of graduate students and residents in standardized training throughout the year. It currently has more than 30 graduate students enrolled, continually supplying professional talent to the oncology discipline, with significant achievements in talent development.
The department has always upheld a disciplinary culture that combines inheritance and innovation, with a strong learning atmosphere and high team cohesion, while emphasizing academic exchange and joint disciplinary development. As the chairing institution for clinical research in digestive oncology within the Department of Oncology of Capital Medical University, it initiated and annually hosts the national continuing education program Forum on Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy for Malignant Tumors. Each year, the forum attracts more than 100 oncology experts, researchers, and graduate students from dozens of hospitals across China, who jointly discuss the latest advances in cancer treatment and help build a high-level academic exchange platform. At the same time, the department actively works with the oncology departments of numerous tertiary and secondary hospitals on joint disciplinary development, putting advanced diagnostic and treatment concepts into clinical practice and promoting the multidisciplinary development and standardized management of cancer treatment. In fulfilling its social responsibility, the department relies on its Party and Communist Youth League branches to conduct the grassroots-focused special campaign “Cancer Prevention and Control Journey Across China” year-round. It carries out free medical consultations and telemedicine services in Shanxi, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, and other regions, opens green channels for medical care for patients with special needs at the grassroots level, implements the requirements of the cancer prevention and control plan, and safeguards the health of people in grassroots communities through professional expertise.
In the future, the Oncology Center will continue to make clinical diagnosis and treatment its core, research innovation its driving force, and talent development its foundation. It will continuously improve the level of comprehensive oncology diagnosis and treatment, deepen multidisciplinary collaboration and exploration of cutting-edge technologies, and remain committed to its original public-service mission. By continuously expanding the influence of the discipline, it will provide the vast number of cancer patients with higher-quality, more professional, and more individualized diagnosis and treatment services and contribute to the development of regional cancer prevention and control efforts.
