Orthopaedic Centre

Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University

Our hospital's Department of Orthopedics was established in 1958. After several decades of hard work by several generations of orthopedic professionals, it has now developed into a comprehensive department of considerable scale and expertise. At present, the Department of Orthopedics has professors and 10 associate professors. All personnel with senior professional titles have overseas study experience. At the same time, the Department of Orthopedics undertakes clinical teaching for Capital Medical University, as well as the training of doctoral and master's students.

The Department of Orthopedics is divided into 4 specialty groups.

Trauma Group--The Trauma Group of our hospital's Department of Orthopedics handles all osteoarticular trauma of the pelvis and extremities, as well as injuries to soft tissues such as blood vessels, nerves, and tendons. It is characterized not only by interlocking intramedullary nailing and other minimally invasive techniques, but also has extensive theoretical and practical experience in the treatment of osteoporotic fractures.

In the early 1990s, our trauma specialty was among the first in China to introduce from abroad and promote domestically the advanced interlocking intramedullary nailing technique for extremity fractures. It has continuously improved and developed this technique through basic research, fundamental theory, and clinical practice, and has consistently remained at the leading domestic level in this field. It has successively and regularly organized numerous national training courses on interlocking intramedullary nails and minimally invasive techniques, and republished the monograph 《Internal Fixation with Intramedullary Nails》, filling a gap in China and making an irreplaceable contribution to the development of orthopedics in China, receiving unanimous recognition both domestically and internationally.

At the same time, with the development of new theories, new technologies, new materials, and new designs in orthopedics, we were the first in China to advocate the so-called BO principles, the concept of biological fixation, and related minimally invasive techniques. We are committed to their theoretical and experimental research and clinical practice, and have developed a series of minimally invasive clinical treatment techniques, including minimally invasive intramedullary fixation, minimally invasive external fixation, and minimally invasive locking-plate techniques. We have also compiled a number of trauma monographs, such as 《Modern Traumatic Orthopedics》, thereby bringing the level of trauma and orthopedic treatment to a leading position.

Building on our department's leading research in the field of osteoporotic fractures, the trauma specialty has developed a relatively mature, efficient, and high-level distinctive approach to treating osteoporotic fractures of the extremities, achieving good social benefits and recognition from the profession.

Joint Group--The Joint Group of the Department of Orthopedics has several chief physicians and extensive clinical experience. It mainly provides treatment for conditions involving artificial joint replacement, correction, sports injuries, arthroscopy of the shoulder, knee, hip, and ankle, and foot and ankle surgery.

Our department has performed artificial joint replacement surgery for many years and has very extensive experience. Artificial joint replacement has been used for many years to treat disorders of the hip, knee, elbow, ankle, shoulder, and other joints, with very good therapeutic results. Good therapeutic results and satisfactory long-term outcomes can be achieved for osteoarthropathies of various joints, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic arthritis, osteonecrosis of the femoral head, developmental dysplasia of the hip, and congenital dislocation of the hip. At present, for the hip, joints with ceramic-on-ceramic and metal-on-metal bearing interfaces can provide better long-term outcomes and better joint function. For younger patients, hip resurfacing can also be used to preserve more bone stock. For early osteonecrosis of the femoral head, trabecular metal reconstruction rods can be used, with very good results. For the knee, in addition to conventional knee prostheses, unicompartmental replacement prostheses, mobile-bearing inserts, and prostheses with high-flexion designs are also available to meet the needs of different types of patients, and their clinical results are satisfactory. For loose or infected artificial joints, revision surgery can be performed, with implantation of a new artificial joint to improve symptoms and function.

Severe hallux valgus deformity can be significantly improved through corrective osteotomy, relieving pain, allowing the patient to wear normal shoes, and providing a low recurrence rate and relatively satisfactory long-term results. For patients requiring a relatively high range of motion, artificial interphalangeal joint replacement can be performed to achieve better mobility. For severe rheumatoid foot deformity, corrective osteotomy or interphalangeal joint replacement can be performed; interphalangeal joint fusion can also achieve very satisfactory results.

For various sports injuries and intra-articular lesions, minimally invasive surgery using arthroscopy can achieve very good therapeutic results. Our department has performed arthroscopic surgery for many years and has extensive clinical experience.

Our department also has relatively extensive clinical experience in treating bone tumors. For malignant tumors such as osteosarcoma, surgical resection, prosthesis implantation, and chemotherapy can preserve the patient's limb and improve quality of life.

Spine Group--We have extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of various adult spinal diseases, particularly the surgical treatment of various adult degenerative diseases, and are one of the hospitals in China to have first adopted interbody fusion techniques. More than 10 years ago, our hospital's Department of Orthopedics subdivided into a spine specialty group, with dedicated physicians providing diagnosis and treatment for spinal disorders. Now, under the leadership of Director Wang Bingqiang, the group has 3 chief physicians and 2 associate chief physicians. In recent years, while extensively carrying out the diagnosis and treatment of common spinal surgical conditions, we have taken the lead nationally in performing minimally invasive spinal surgery, including endoscopic lumbar discectomy, percutaneous pedicle screw fixation, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, and posterior total vertebrectomy, as well as other highly difficult operations.

Modern people pursue a high quality of life, and we are also constantly pursuing high-quality services. We believe that the Spine Group will provide better service to patients with spinal diseases.

Osteoporosis Group--Our hospital is one of the earliest hospitals in China to conduct research on osteoporosis and has accumulated extensive clinical experience in the medical and surgical treatment of osteoporosis and related diseases, particularly the surgical treatment of osteoporosis.

All medical personnel in the Department of Orthopedics will do everything possible for your health.
