Otolaryngology
1、Department Overview:
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology was established in 1900 and is one of the earliest independently established otorhinolaryngology departments in China. In 1997, it was approved by the State Council as a training site for master’s graduate students; in 2009, it was approved as a training site for professional-degree doctoral students and a postdoctoral research station in clinical medicine. Over the years, it has trained more than 100 graduate students for the country. Since 2002, it has been recognized as a specialty with distinctive features in the Qingdao municipal health system; in 2008 and 2011, it became one of the key disciplines in the Qingdao municipal health system; in 2011, it was recognized as a key discipline under cultivation by the hospital; for seven consecutive years, it was recognized as one of the hospital’s “Top Ten Departments,” “Model Departments,” “Quality Excellence Departments,” and so on. In 2014, it was recognized as the Key Laboratory of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery of Shandong Province, and in 2015 as a Clinical Key Specialty of Shandong Province. Over the past more than ten years, under the leadership of Professor Li Na, the talent team in Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery has grown steadily, various highly difficult medical technologies have been introduced successively, discipline development has continued to strengthen, and its domestic academic standing has gradually improved.

Department personnel serve as editorial board members, standing editorial board members, deputy editors-in-chief, and in other such roles for all academic journals in the domestic field of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.
3、Professional Features:
Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery currently provides clinical services at three hospital areas: the Shinan Hospital Area, the Laoshan Hospital Area, and the West Coast Hospital Area (West Coast Medical Center). Four professional directions are currently established: otology, rhinology, laryngology, and head and neck surgery.
(1)Rhinology: This area has been a distinctive feature and specialty of the department for half a century. Over more than 50 years, from research on rhinoscleroma and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine research on chronic rhinosinusitis to minimally invasive nasal and paranasal sinus surgery, rhinology-orbital surgery, and nasal skull-base surgery research, it has had a certain influence throughout China. Current procedures, including endoscopic surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, optic nerve decompression, cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea repair, endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, endoscopic resection of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, endoscopic rhinoplasty and functional reconstruction, endoscopic rhinology-orbital surgery, and endoscopic nasal skull-base surgery techniques, have achieved satisfactory results with little trauma and high efficacy, marking the rhinology specialty as being at an advanced level nationally and a leading level in the province.
(2)Otology: Routine procedures include radical mastoidectomy, tympanoplasty, combined-approach tympanoplasty, lateral-wall reconstruction of the epitympanum, and conchoplasty. On the basis of removing lesions, these procedures preserve patients’ hearing as much as possible. Otoneurosurgical treatment of Meniere’s disease and facial paralysis has achieved good results. For many years, surgery has been performed for benign and malignant tumors of the external and middle ear, and multiple joint operations with neurosurgery have been carried out to remove ear-related lateral skull-base tumors. Repair of cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea has achieved good results. In recent years, cochlear implantation has produced good results and had a considerable social impact. Research has been conducted on the diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment of vertigo, and the diagnosis and manual repositioning of BPPV have achieved good results. The diagnostic level for enlarged vestibular aqueduct and auditory neuropathy has improved considerably.
(3)Laryngology: Research has been conducted on obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome, and individualized treatment has been provided for patients. Endoscopic minimally invasive treatment of adenoid hypertrophy and tonsillar hypertrophy has been performed, achieving the results of little trauma and good efficacy. More than 250 operations for tracheal and bronchial foreign bodies in children are performed each year, with an average hospital stay of 2.2 days. The emergency rescue success rate is high; both the number of cases and the success rate rank among the leading comprehensive hospitals in China, placing the department first in the province.
(4)Head and Neck Surgery: Surgery for pharyngeal, laryngeal, and neck tumors is widely performed, with more than 150 cases annually. A variety of laryngeal function-preserving procedures have been performed, enabling 80% of patients with laryngeal cancer or hypopharyngeal cancer to preserve their phonation, respiration, and swallowing functions, or to have their phonation function reconstructed. This has greatly improved patients’ quality of life. Surgery for benign and malignant thyroid tumors, minimally invasive and endoscopic thyroid surgery, and reconstructive surgery for advanced thyroid cancer invading the larynx, trachea, or esophagus are currently widely performed.
4、Medical Technology
Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery currently has 105 beds (75 in the Shinan Hospital Area and 30 in the West Coast Hospital Area) and advanced medical equipment, including the most advanced nasal endoscopic surgical system, an otologic surgical power system, microscopes, voice surgery instruments, and other equipment. The medical service philosophy of “putting patients at the center and medical quality at the core” is implemented in depth. The annual outpatient volume exceeds 200,000 visits, and more than 4,500 surgical procedures are performed annually. High-difficulty, high-quality procedures, including anterior skull-base and lateral skull-base surgery, are continuously introduced.
5、Research and Teaching
The department undertakes undergraduate, graduate, and seven-year-program teaching, as well as undergraduate nursing teaching, for the Medical College of Qingdao University. Since 2010, it has undertaken English-language teaching for international students from South Asia. Each year, it admits 2-3 doctoral students and more than 20 master’s students. More than 10 physicians from within and outside the province receive further training each year. Over the past 5 years, department personnel have received 1 grant each from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, 3 projects funded by the Shandong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, 3 grants from the Shandong Excellent Young and Middle-Aged Scientific Research Award Fund, and more than 10 provincial- and municipal-level projects from the Shandong Provincial Department of Health, the Department of Education, the Qingdao Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology, and other authorities, with total project funding reaching more than 2 million yuan. Over the past 3 years, more than 120 papers have been published; department personnel have served as chief editors or deputy chief editors of 9 monographs and contributed to more than 20 monographs. They have received 8 provincial- and municipal-level awards for scientific research achievements.
