Paediatric Surgery
1. Overview of Pediatric Surgery and the “Children’s Minimally Invasive Surgery Center”
Pediatric Surgery has a long history. It is a key discipline of Shandong Province, a discipline with a Taishan Scholar position in Shandong Province, a key discipline in medicine and health in Shandong Province, a postdoctoral mobile-station discipline and a doctoral-degree-granting discipline of Qingdao University. In 1993, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a master’s-degree postgraduate training site; in 1995, it became a key discipline under provincial development; in 1996, it became a key and specialty development discipline of Qingdao; in 1997, the Institute of Pediatrics was established; and in 2005, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a doctoral-degree postgraduate training site. It has developed rapidly in clinical technology, talent training, the management of difficult and critically ill diseases, scientific and technological innovation, academic team development, and teaching, becoming a center for pediatric surgical medical care, teaching, and research in eastern Shandong Province.
At present, the Department of Pediatric Surgery has established Qingdao’s first “Children’s Minimally Invasive Surgery Center” and is subdivided into six specialized subsections: General Pediatric Surgery and Hepatobiliary Surgery, Neonatal Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Urology, Pediatric Oncology, and Pediatric Thoracic Surgery. Each subsection has clinical and research academic leaders. All are headed by expert teams that have systematically studied pediatric precision, minimally invasive, and robotic surgery in the United States, Japan, and South Korea. They comprehensively perform pediatric precision, minimally invasive, and robotic surgery, greatly reducing surgical trauma and pain for children and receiving excellent social feedback and reputation.
2. Talent Structure
The various specialties of Pediatric Surgery currently have 21 practicing physicians, including 4 with senior professional titles and 5 with associate-senior professional titles; 12 hold doctoral degrees and 9 hold master’s degrees; there is 1 doctoral supervisor and 5 master’s supervisors. All hold academic positions as chairpersons, vice chairpersons, or committee members in national, provincial, and municipal professional societies. Ten physicians have undertaken advanced training for more than six months at pediatric surgery diagnosis and treatment centers in Japan, the United States, Germany, South Korea, Israel, Beijing, Shanghai, and other locations. Each year, the department accepts 2–3 physicians from inside and outside the province for further training.
Pediatric Surgery is currently Shandong Province’s only specialty base and examination base for standardized residency training. The academic team has a high overall level of competence and a well-structured talent hierarchy.
3. Medical Technology and Specialty Features of “Precision and Minimally Invasive Surgery”
Pediatric Surgery of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University has now developed into a comprehensive pediatric surgical diagnosis and treatment center integrating medical care, teaching, and research. It has 66 open beds: 43 in the Shinan Campus and 23 in the West Coast (Huangdao) Campus; more than 35,000 outpatient visits and more than 3,000 operations are performed annually. The center is formed through collaboration among the Pediatric Surgery Ward and outpatient/emergency departments of the Shinan Campus, the Pediatric Surgery Ward and outpatient/emergency departments of the West Coast (Huangdao) Campus, the outpatient department of the Laoshan Campus, the Institute of Pediatrics, the Pediatric Imaging Center, and multiple other departments.
Pediatric Surgery has established close collaborative relationships with the da Vinci Robotic Precision and Minimally Invasive Surgery Center in Chicago, United States; the Anderson Children’s Oncology Center in the United States; the Department of Surgery of Tokushima University, Japan; the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Japan; the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Yonsei University College of Medicine, South Korea; and the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Rambam Medical Center, Israel. Multiple personnel visits and academic exchanges are conducted each year. Experts and professors from the United States, Japan, South Korea, and other countries are also invited to our Pediatric Surgery Department for clinical collaboration in precision, minimally invasive, and robotic surgery, academic seminars, special lectures, and other activities. This enables pediatric minimally invasive medical technology and academic standards to keep pace with international developments. Together with Qingdao’s first “Children’s Minimally Invasive Surgery Center,” the department provides high-level pediatric precision, minimally invasive, and robotic surgical technology, greatly benefiting pediatric patients and families in Qingdao and surrounding areas.
4. Scientific Research and Teaching
Pediatric Surgery has undertaken 1 project under the National 12th Five-Year Plan Science and Technology Support Program, completed or undertaken 8 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, and more than 12 provincial-, ministerial-, departmental-, and municipal-level research projects. Total research funding has exceeded RMB 30 million. Ten research projects have completed scientific appraisal, all reaching an advanced international or domestic level. The department has edited or co-edited more than 10 medical monographs, including Pediatric Hepatobiliary Surgery (1st and 2nd editions) and Pediatric Surgical Oncology, published by the People’s Medical Publishing House. More than 100 academic papers have been published in domestic and international specialty journals, of which more than 60 have been indexed in SCI, CA, BA, EM, or MEDLINE. The department holds 13 utility-model patents and has received 13 science and technology awards, including 1 Third Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Ministry of Health, 3 Second Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress of Shandong Province, 5 Third Prizes for Natural Science and Scientific and Technological Progress of Shandong Province, and 5 Second Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress of Qingdao.
