Bone Tumor Department
The bone tumor specialty at Qingdao University Affiliated Hospital is one of the six specialties of our Orthopedic Medical Center and is dedicated to the comprehensive treatment of bone and soft-tissue tumors. It was established in 2016. At its establishment, it was the only bone tumor subspecialty in the Qingdao area, filling the gap in specialized comprehensive treatment of bone tumors in the area. In recent years, with the strong support of the hospital and under the leadership of Yue Bin, Deputy Chief Physician and head of the department, the Department of Bone Tumors at Qingdao University Affiliated Hospital has become highly influential in Qingdao and the Jiaodong Peninsula. It has gradually become the first-choice department for many bone tumor patients in Qingdao, promoting standardized and precise treatment of bone tumor patients in Qingdao and surrounding areas. At present, our Department of Bone Tumors is the chairing institution of the Bone Tumor Group of the Qingdao Medical Association.
The bone tumor team currently consists of 1 associate chief physician and 3 resident physicians, all of whom are medical doctors holding doctoral degrees and graduated from renowned universities in China and abroad. Each year, more than 1,000 visits by patients with various bone and soft-tissue tumors are managed in the outpatient clinic, and the annual number of operations can exceed 200. Since the department was established, it has completed more than 600 operations for various bone tumors, including more than 100 resections and functional reconstructions for high-risk cervical and thoracic spine tumors and complex pelvic tumors. The department now fully performs highly complex procedures, including limb-salvage treatment for limb tumors; segmental prosthetic reconstruction after tumor-segment resection of long-bone tumors; piecemeal or en bloc resection of bone or soft-tissue tumors; pelvic tumor resection and reconstruction; tumor endoprosthetic replacement of the hip and knee joints; reverse shoulder joint tumor prosthesis replacement; and elbow joint tumor prosthesis replacement.
In March 2016, our hospital appointed Professor Guo Wei of Peking University People's Hospital (former president of the Asia-Pacific Society of Bone Tumors, former head of the Bone Tumor Group of the Orthopedic Society of the Chinese Medical Association, head of the Bone Tumor Group of the Oncology Society of the Chinese Medical Association, and an internationally renowned bone tumor specialist) as honorary director and visiting professor. He currently guides our team in performing dozens of complex bone tumor operations, promoting the professional development and academic exchange of the Department of Bone Tumors and advancing the department to a new level. The department has now begun to take shape and has 10 beds. Yue Bin, Deputy Chief Physician and head of the department, currently serves as chair of the Bone Tumor Group of the Orthopedic Branch of the Qingdao Medical Association and vice chair of the Orthopedic Branch of the Qingdao Medical Association, placing him in a leading position in the field of bone tumor surgery in Qingdao and the Jiaodong Peninsula. All medical and nursing staff in the department are working together and making unremitting efforts to relieve the suffering of patients with bone tumors. The Department of Bone Tumors at Qingdao University Affiliated Hospital has an even brighter future!
Technical Introduction:
At present, our department mainly focuses on the surgical treatment of various primary benign and malignant bone tumors, soft-tissue tumors, and metastatic bone cancer. Since the specialty was established, our department has successively performed a number of complex tumor operations, including standardized comprehensive treatment of bone and soft-tissue sarcomas comprising neoadjuvant chemotherapy + radical tumor resection with limb-salvage reconstruction + postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy, as well as genetic testing combined with targeted drug therapy; precise intraoperative resection, using a computer three-dimensional reconstruction system, of high-risk spinal tumors (in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral vertebrae and within the spinal canal) and pelvic tumors, with reconstruction of axial stability and function; precise resection of limb tumors followed by tumor prosthetic replacement of the hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow joints; and limb-salvage procedures such as total humeral replacement and segmental prosthesis replacement. In addition, the department is proficient in compartment resection and radical resection of soft-tissue sarcomas, supplemented by intraoperative radiofrequency tumor inactivation to effectively reduce the tumor recurrence rate, along with a series of other specialized bone tumor techniques.
To date, surgery has been successfully performed for more than 600 patients in Qingdao and surrounding areas. Most surgical patients have had favorable postoperative prognoses, their survival periods have been extended, and their quality of life has been greatly improved, with satisfactory treatment outcomes.
