Pediatric Neurology
The pediatric neurology specialty was established in 1978. After more than 40 years of talent training and recruitment and continuous learning, the discipline gradually matured. In 2021, the hospital reorganized its disciplines and officially established the Department of Pediatric Neurology, becoming the first hospital in Qingdao to establish a pediatric neurology department. It has 21 beds and is located at the West Coast Campus. The department has 6 physicians and 1 technician, including 5 doctoral degree holders and 1 master's degree holder; 1 supervisor of master's students; and 1 Taishan Scholar Young Expert.
2. Clinical Services and Technologies
The main conditions treated by the Department of Pediatric Neurology include neuroinfectious diseases (acute suppurative meningitis, viral encephalitis, etc.), neuroimmune diseases (autoimmune encephalitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, neuromyelitis optica, etc.), neuromuscular diseases (progressive muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, congenital myotonia, etc.), neurogenetic diseases (mitochondrial diseases, Tian syndrome, etc.), and paroxysmal disorders (epilepsy, movement disorders, etc.).
3. Specialty Highlights
The department has successively introduced a number of specialty technologies, including: 1) video EEG and high-frequency oscillation EEG examinations, which assist in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of paroxysmal disorders, epilepsy classification, assessment of brain function, etc.; 2) polysomnography, which assists in the diagnosis of parasomnias, sleep-related epilepsy, disorders of excessive daytime sleepiness, etc.; 3) ketogenic diet therapy, used for children with various drug-resistant epilepsies (such as infantile spasms), Glut-1 deficiency, etc., greatly improving their prognosis; 4) intrathecal injection therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA): intrathecal treatment with nusinersen sodium injection has greatly improved the prognosis of children with SMA.
In addition, our department was the first to establish a joint outpatient clinic for rare diseases of the pediatric nervous system. Chief physicians from multiple specialties, including pediatric neurology, child healthcare, radiology, and the prenatal diagnosis center, conduct joint consultations. The clinic has diagnosed various rare diseases, including Niemann-Pick syndrome, paroxysmal dystonia, and Mabry syndrome, and has developed disease-management pathways for many chronic diseases, such as diagnostic and treatment pathways for SMA, progressive muscular dystrophy, and tuberous sclerosis. This has greatly enhanced the influence of the discipline and even of the hospital.
4. Research, Teaching, and External Exchange
In research, the department has published more than 10 papers in SCI-indexed and Chinese core journals since its establishment. Its members have undertaken or participated in a number of national and provincial/municipal research projects, and one Shandong Provincial Natural Science Foundation project is currently underway. In teaching, clinical instruction is provided to undergraduate and graduate students, and 2-4 graduate students are trained each year. In addition, dozens of clinical interns are supervised each year, earning favorable comments from students.
