1. Overview of the Department

The Department of Cardiac Ultrasound originated from the Department of Internal Medicine Echocardiography Room in the early 1970s and the Cardiac Ultrasound Room of the Cadre Healthcare Ward in the early 1980s. After more than 40 years of unremitting efforts and development by several generations, it has now developed into the largest cardiac ultrasound diagnostic center in eastern Shandong, with its medical, teaching, and scientific research work distributed across 4 campuses, including the Shinan Campus, Laoshan Campus, West Coast Campus, and Shibei Campus. The Department of Cardiac Ultrasound has a technically proficient and united work team. It currently has 19 physicians, including 5 chief physicians, 2 deputy chief physicians, 6 attending physicians, and 6 resident physicians; 7 hold doctoral degrees in medicine, and 9 hold master's degrees in medicine. The department is equipped with 14 internationally leading color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic instruments and has carried out diagnostic and treatment technologies including routine cardiac ultrasound, bedside ultrasound for critically ill patients, ultrasound-guided congenital heart disease interventional treatment intervention, intraoperative cardiac ultrasound monitoring, fetal cardiac ultrasound, stress cardiac ultrasound, and transesophageal cardiac ultrasound, with an average annual examination volume of 150,000 person-times. Authorization to confer master's degrees in cardiac ultrasound was approved in 2001, and authorization to confer doctoral degrees was approved in 2009. There are currently 2 doctoral supervisors and 4 master's supervisors, and more than 50 master's and doctoral graduate students have been trained. Many members of the department serve in academic positions such as chairpersons, deputy chairpersons, and committee members of provincial, municipal, and national professional societies of ultrasound medicine. They have successively received several scientific research awards, including the First Prize for Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements of Shandong Higher Education Institutions, the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation Achievements in Medicine of Shandong, the First Prize for Graduate Education and Teaching Achievements of Shandong Province, the First Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Soft Sciences of Shandong Province, the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of Qingdao, and the Third Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of Shandong Province.
