Sports Medicine
1、Discipline Overview
The Department of Orthopaedics of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University was founded in 1947 by Professor Shen Fupeng, who was then the hospital president. After the arduous efforts of several generations, it has made significant progress in medical care, education, and research, and has become a renowned discipline in Shandong Province. In 1981, Orthopaedic Surgery was approved by the State Council as one of the first master’s degree authorization sites in Shandong Province; in 1995, it was designated by the Shandong Provincial Department of Health as one of the first provincial key disciplines; in 1998, the Shandong Provincial Institute of Traumatic Orthopaedics was established; in 2000, it was designated by the Shandong Provincial Department of Health as a provincial key laboratory for medicine and health. Throughout Shandong Province, to date, only two entities are both key disciplines and key laboratories, and Orthopaedics is one of them. In 2007, it was approved as a postdoctoral training discipline at the Clinical Medicine Postdoctoral Mobile Station; in 2009, it was approved as a clinical doctoral training site in Orthopaedic Surgery; in 2010, as an academic doctoral training site in Orthopaedic Surgery; and in 2013, as a National Key Clinical Specialty.
In 2005, the orthopaedic specialty was further subdivided, and the Departments of Spinal Surgery, Joint Surgery, and Traumatic Hand and Foot Surgery were established separately. After the Department of Joint Surgery became independent, it mainly performed knee and hip replacement and revision surgeries, while also forming a subspecialty direction—the minimally invasive joint group—which primarily performed minimally invasive procedures such as arthroscopic meniscal repair and anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Its technical level reached an internationally advanced and domestically leading level, with excellent clinical results.
In August 2013, the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University further adjusted its disciplines and refined its specialties, establishing the Orthopaedic Medical Center and vigorously developing orthopaedic subspecialties. The minimally invasive joint group became an independent department and formed the Department of Sports Medicine. It also carried out various new technologies and projects, such as meniscal suturing, the triple procedure for patellar dislocation, simultaneous stabilization for knee dislocation, minimally invasive knee replacement, and minimally invasive hip replacement. Shoulder arthroscopy was also vigorously developed; currently, the volume of shoulder arthroscopy surgeries ranks first in Shandong Province. Arthroscopic techniques for other major joints, such as the hip, ankle, elbow, and wrist, are also becoming increasingly mature.
2、Talent Structure
The Department of Sports Medicine has a strong talent base and has developed into a high-level medical, teaching, and research group with a full range of specialties, headed by a doctoral supervisor and supported by a large number of highly qualified young and middle-aged technical specialists. The department currently has 5 full-time physicians, including 2 with doctoral degrees and 3 with master’s degrees; the proportion of personnel with a master’s degree or above is 100%. There is 1 person with a senior professional title and 2 with deputy senior professional titles. There is 1 doctoral supervisor; 2 people hold positions in national-level academic organizations, 3 hold positions in provincial- or municipal-level academic organizations, and 2 serve as editorial board members or reviewers for medical journals in China and abroad.
3、Specialty Features
(1)Knee Arthroscopy Techniques
The knee arthroscopic surgeries currently performed by the Department of Sports Medicine include meniscal suturing, single-/double-bundle reconstruction of the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, double-/triple-combination procedures for patellar dislocation, and minimally invasive repair of complex knee injuries. For patients with meniscal injuries, suturing is performed whenever possible in order to preserve function as much as possible and delay the onset of arthritis; the technical level and surgical volume are already at the forefront in the province. The department has unique experience in determining the timing of surgery for complex knee injuries and in postoperative rehabilitation training.
(2)Shoulder Arthroscopy Techniques
The Department of Orthopaedics of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University performed its first shoulder arthroscopy surgery as early as 2010. After the Department of Sports Medicine was established, it began to focus on this type of surgery. At the same time, it collaborated with the Imaging Department to conduct in-depth research on shoulder-related diseases and refine the diagnosis of shoulder disorders, such as rotator cuff injuries, long-head biceps tendinitis, and subacromial impingement, rather than broadly classifying them as the former “shoulder periarthritis.” More than 500 such surgeries have been performed to date, with approximately 150-200 such surgeries performed each year, ranking first in the province. Shoulder arthroscopy surgeries include arthroscopic repair of rotator cuff injuries, repair of SLAP injuries, capsular suturing for recurrent shoulder dislocation, and shoulder arthroscopic debridement, all of which have achieved good clinical results.
(3)Other Major Joint Arthroscopy Techniques
The Department of Sports Medicine began performing elbow and ankle arthroscopy in 2014 and has now performed more than 200 such surgeries. The procedures include routine operations such as loose body removal, joint impingement reshaping, and capsular release. In 2015, it also began performing hip and wrist arthroscopy, filling a gap in the Jiaodong region; its technical level ranks among the leading levels in the province.
(4)Minimally Invasive Joint Replacement Surgery
For patients with severe knee osteoarthritis whose conservative treatment is ineffective, the Department of Sports Medicine generally adopts minimally invasive, small-incision artificial joint replacement surgery, achieving good results, rapid postoperative recovery, and high patient satisfaction. Similarly, minimally invasive joint replacement techniques have also begun to be applied to hip joint surgical cases
4、Research and Teaching
In recent years, the department has undertaken 5 provincial- and ministerial-level projects and more than 10 research projects commissioned by local governments at various provincial and municipal levels, as well as public institutions and enterprises; it has received more than 3 provincial- and municipal-level scientific research awards; and it has served as chief editor or deputy chief editor of 3 works. In recent years, it has published a total of more than 50 academic papers in publicly issued domestic academic journals, with more than 10 papers indexed by SCI, MED, and ISTP; 2 projects have been evaluated as reaching an internationally advanced or domestically leading level. It has carried out 2 new technologies and new projects, has more than RMB 500,000 in research funds at its disposal, and has successively established long-term, stable cooperative relationships with Peking University Third Hospital and Huashan Hospital, Shanghai.
In teaching practice, the department adheres to development and innovation. Relying on the National Demonstration Center for Basic Medical Education, it has successively implemented multimedia teaching and bilingual teaching within the university, achieving significant results. Benefiting from the major advantages of being a national key discipline and a doctoral program, and through diligent development and unremitting efforts, it has cumulatively trained more than 100 undergraduate students, more than 20 master’s students, and 5 doctoral students.
