I. Historical evolution The Department of Ophthalmology of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Xiamen University was founded in June 1988. From its inception, the discipline started from a high starting point and benchmarked against domestic frontiers; under the leadership of the then discipline leader, it took the lead in establishing the first eye bank in Fujian Province, filling the gap in regional ophthalmic resources. In the early days of the department, it pioneered in the province a number of leading domestic intraocular and extraocular surgeries, including allogeneic corneal transplantation, interlamellar corneal diathermy, vitrectomy, RK surgery, excimer laser surgery, and cataract extraction combined with intraocular lens implantation, breaking regional ophthalmic technological limitations and greatly promoting the iterative upgrading and standardized development of ophthalmic diagnostic and treatment technology in Fujian Province, establishing the department's pioneering advantages and important industry status in the ophthalmology field of southwestern Fujian. After more than thirty years of dedicated development, the department has grown into a comprehensive key ophthalmology department integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, and blindness prevention and treatment, gradually forming a mature disciplinary system with complete specialty categories, a well-established talent echelon, strong technical strength, and coordinated development of medical care, teaching and research, becoming an important core platform for eye disease diagnosis and treatment, talent cultivation and scientific innovation in southwestern Fujian. II. Disciplinary qualification platform and third-party endorsement The department relies on the platform of Xiamen University's directly affiliated Grade A tertiary hospital and the teaching system of Xiamen University's Medical College, possesses authoritative disciplinary support and third-party industry endorsement, and is a core member unit of the Department of Ophthalmology of Xiamen University, deeply integrated into the integrated medical-educational-research construction system of university ophthalmology; its disciplinary standardization, professionalism and authority have won dual recognition from the university and the industry. As a long-established key regional ophthalmology department, the department has been engaged in clinical work for more than thirty years, accumulating a good industry reputation and public reputation through solid diagnostic and treatment technology, a massive number of surgical cases, and standardized disciplinary management. It has long undertaken public-welfare and professional tasks such as regional blindness prevention and treatment, diagnosis and treatment of difficult eye diseases, and ophthalmology talent cultivation; its technical level, service quality and disciplinary construction achievements have continuously received recognition from health authorities, university research platforms and peers, making it a comprehensive ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment department with outstanding public credibility in southwestern Fujian. III. Talent team and disciplinary structure The department has built an ophthalmic professional medical team with a reasonable structure, a complete echelon and exquisite professionalism. It currently has 11 professional ophthalmologists and 25 medical technicians and nursing staff, with complete talent allocation and fine division of labor. Among them there are 3 chief physicians and 4 associate chief physicians; senior-titled physicians constitute the core diagnostic and treatment backbone of the department; there are 2 doctoral students and 6 master's students, with a high proportion of highly educated personnel, and the team has a solid theoretical foundation and rich clinical experience. To achieve refined, specialized diagnosis and treatment, the department has precisely divided subspecialty directions, establishing a number of mature subspecialty groups including cataract, vitreoretinal, glaucoma, optometry, strabismus and amblyopia, orbital-ocular surface-oculoplastic, and lacrimal duct diseases, fully covering all fields of ophthalmic disease diagnosis and treatment. The leaders of each subspecialty have completed advanced training at well-known domestic ophthalmology institutions and are proficient in cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment technologies at home and abroad. Relying on the collaborative development model of subspecialties, a disciplinary development pattern of "specialized disease-specific treatment, precise diagnosis and treatment, full-domain coverage" has been formed, with strong overall technical strength and efficient team collaboration. Core technology and diagnostic-treatment advantages The department's clinical technical strength is outstanding, routinely performing all kinds of routine and highly sophisticated, difficult ophthalmic surgeries, with a stable surgical volume and rich diagnostic and treatment experience. Currently the department has 7 cataract group-leading experts and 3 vitreous surgery group-leading experts, completing 3,000-4,000 ophthalmic surgeries of various types annually, and tens of thousands of sophisticated ophthalmic surgeries cumulatively. Its diagnostic and treatment scope fully covers all kinds of ophthalmic diseases; it can routinely perform glaucoma surgery, lacrimal duct dredging and repair surgery, strabismus correction surgery, diagnosis and treatment of orbital diseases, ocular plastic repair and other full-category ophthalmic surgeries, comprehensively meeting the eye disease diagnosis and treatment needs of adults and children. Relying on excellent surgical technology and a mature diagnostic-treatment system, the department vigorously promotes the ophthalmology day-surgery model; more than 85% of the hospital's ophthalmic surgeries are completed through day surgery. This model effectively optimizes the allocation of medical resources, greatly shortens patients' hospital stays and reduces medical costs; at the same time, a complete whole-course perioperative management and control system has been established, which, while improving diagnostic and treatment efficiency, strictly guarantees surgical safety and treatment quality, fully demonstrating the department's refined, efficient and safe hardcore diagnostic-treatment strength. It routinely performs micro-incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery combined with foldable intraocular lens implantation, various complex vitreoretinal surgeries, rescue of severe ocular trauma, reconstruction of anterior and posterior segment tissues, limbal stem cell transplantation, precise strabismus correction, various anti-glaucoma surgeries, orbital disease diagnosis and treatment, and ocular plastic repair and other sophisticated diagnostic and treatment projects.
