Introduction to the Emergency Department of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated with Xiamen University Preface The Emergency Department of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated with Xiamen University serves as the hospital’s external-facing window. It undertakes the initial evaluation, reception, and rescue of all types of acute and critical patients at the hospital, while also undertaking emergency treatment for various public health events and sudden emergencies. The Department of Emergency Medicine has integrated emergency care, emergency rescue, and intensive care into one, and can provide one-stop emergency medical services without intermediate transfer for patients with acute and critical illnesses. The emergency and critical care subspecialty can further integrate the strengths of emergency medicine and critical care medicine and implement seamless links in the treatment of critically ill patients. Our hospital’s Emergency Department is the largest comprehensive emergency department in southwestern Fujian in terms of scale and staffing. It has an integrated treatment system comprising emergency internal medicine, emergency surgery, a resuscitation room, an emergency infusion observation room, emergency wards (a trauma surgery ward and an emergency internal medicine ward), and an emergency ICU. Our department’s annual emergency volume (excluding the service volume of emergency pediatrics, emergency neurology, emergency gynecology, emergency otolaryngology, emergency ophthalmology, and emergency stomatology) is approximately 220,000 visits/year, and its annual rescue volume exceeds 20,000 visits, ranking among the top in Fujian Province. It handles nearly 1/2 of the patients transported by 120 within Xiamen Island, while also receiving a large number of critically ill patients transferred from Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, and Longyan, making it the emergency department with the strongest technical capabilities in southwestern Fujian. The Emergency Department has 70 beds in total, including 10 in the resuscitation room, 10 in the emergency ICU, 30 in the emergency ward, and 20 in the infusion observation room. This integrated treatment system shortens to the greatest extent the rescue time and distance for critically ill patients to reach the ICU, greatly increases the speed of rescue for critically ill patients, and improves the rescue success rate. Introduction to the Emergency ICU of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated with Xiamen University The emergency ICU is an important component of the Emergency Department. Established in 2002, it was the earliest comprehensive ICU established in Xiamen. The team strives for excellence, advances boldly, and safeguards the lives of critically ill patients. It is proficient in carrying out techniques including ECMO, extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ventilator treatment, continuous blood purification, bedside ultrasound, and percutaneous tracheotomy guided by fiberoptic bronchoscopy. As a national-level standardized residency training base for the emergency medicine specialty and a master’s student training institution of Fujian Medical University and Xiamen University School of Medicine, the Emergency Department has supplied society with outstanding emergency and critical care professionals, saved the lives of countless emergency and critically ill patients, and gained a strong social reputation.
