The specialty wards admit more than 400 patients per month on average, and the specialty outpatient and emergency departments receive more than 3,500 visits per month on average. The department has 59 medical and nursing staff members, including 3 chief physicians, 8 associate chief physicians, 6 attending physicians, 3 resident physicians, and 3 master’s supervisors. Seven staff members hold doctoral degrees (including 4 currently enrolled in doctoral programs), and 20 hold master’s degrees.
The Department of General Surgery of Zhongshan Hospital covers a wide range of surgical procedures, many of which are highly complex, and can independently and successfully perform all surgeries required of tertiary Grade A hospitals as stipulated by the Ministry of Health. It was the first in China and Asia and the second in the world to perform endoscopic thyroidectomy via the transoral floor-of-mouth approach, achieving completely scarless thyroid surgery on the body surface. It performed the world’s first endoscopic lateral cervical lymph node dissection for thyroid cancer through a combined trans-thoracic and transoral approach, achieving both complete radical dissection for patients with lateral cervical lymph node metastasis from thyroid cancer and a completely scarless minimally invasive thyroid operation in the neck. It performed the first trans-submental oral vestibular endoscopic thyroid operation in Asia and China, providing an alternative for patients for whom a purely transoral procedure is technically difficult, while achieving a concealed minimally invasive cervical incision and thorough lymph node dissection during endoscopic thyroid surgery. It was among the first in China and abroad to perform simultaneous silicone prosthesis implantation for chin augmentation during endoscopic thyroid surgery via the oral vestibular approach, meeting both the cosmetic needs and the need for radical thyroid tumor treatment in patients with micrognathia and thyroid disease.
Robotic thyroid surgery: The department completed the first da Vinci Xi robotic thyroid operation in southwestern Fujian and was the first in China to perform gasless, transoral da Vinci robotic thyroid surgery. By leveraging the advantages of the robotic system, the department performs refined thyroid dissection and precisely protects the parathyroid glands and their blood supply, as well as the superior laryngeal nerves, recurrent laryngeal nerves, and other structures.
The Department of General Surgery is technologically advanced not only in transoral endoscopic thyroid surgery, trans-thoracic and trans-mammary endoscopic thyroid surgery, totally areolar endoscopic thyroid surgery, transaxillary endoscopic thyroid surgery, and subclavian endoscopic thyroid surgery, but also in minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopic radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer, laparoscopic radical colectomy for colon cancer, laparoscopic sphincter-preserving surgery for low rectal cancer, laparoscopic total extraperitoneal mesh repair of inguinal hernia (TEP), laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal mesh repair of inguinal hernia (TAPP), and laparoscopic tension-free repair of abdominal wall incisional hernia (IMOP). It was the first department in Fujian Province to perform laparoscopic bariatric surgery. The department continuously introduces new technologies to reduce surgical trauma and shorten hospital stays.
The Department of General Surgery has very strong capabilities in hernia surgery, and its diagnostic and treatment technologies for gastroesophageal reflux disease are highly advanced. Two national-level hernia diagnosis and treatment platforms have been established in the Department of General Surgery: the “Xiamen Branch of the China Hernia College” and the “Xiamen Sub-center of the Hiatal Hernia and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Training Center of the China Hernia College.” Two national-level disease-specific centers have also been established in the Department of General Surgery: the “Cooperation Center for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Hiatal Hernia” and the “Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center.” The Department of General Surgery has hosted national advanced training courses and training programs on hiatal hernia, as well as online live broadcasts, on multiple occasions.
The Department of General Surgery has a beautiful environment, and its wards are clean, comfortable, and orderly. The nursing staff are warm and attentive. They are highly skilled, with high first-attempt success rates for intravenous injections and blood draws, thereby minimizing patients’ pain during treatment. The nursing motto is “Attentive and Warm, Cozy as Home.” The department’s mission is “Unity, Innovation, Quality First, and Excellent Service.” All medical and nursing staff members work together and strive for continuous improvement. Technologically, the department strives to apply the most advanced international and domestic technologies and provide patients with the highest level of care to achieve the most satisfactory outcomes.

IV. Multidisciplinary MDT Comprehensive Diagnosis and Treatment and Full-Course Management
【Information on the Development of the Department’s Multidisciplinary Collaborative Diagnosis and Treatment Mechanism】
As a National Key Specialty, the Department of General Surgery has established a standardized and routine multidisciplinary collaboration (MDT) diagnosis and treatment mechanism for thyroid tumors, gastrointestinal tumors, hernia and gastroesophageal reflux diseases, bariatric and metabolic diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, and complex intra-abdominal infections.
With General Surgery as the lead department, the department collaborates with Radiology, Pathology, Oncology, Endocrinology, Clinical Nutrition, Anesthesiology, Interventional Medicine, and other relevant disciplines to implement difficult-case discussions, joint preoperative assessments, and multidisciplinary consultation.
For difficult and complex cases such as complex thyroid cancer, locally advanced gastrointestinal tumors, complex hiatal hernia, obesity combined with thyroid tumors, refractory inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal fistula, and severe intra-abdominal infection, multidisciplinary consultations are conducted to comprehensively evaluate disease stage, surgical risk, radical treatment plans, perioperative nutritional support, and postoperative comprehensive treatment strategies, thereby overcoming the limitations of diagnosis and treatment by a single department.
The MDT team participates throughout the entire course of patients’ diagnosis and treatment. Before surgery, it jointly evaluates surgical feasibility and the risk of comorbidities. During surgery, it provides multidisciplinary technical support. After surgery, it coordinates adjuvant cancer treatment, metabolic intervention, nutritional rehabilitation, and psychological counseling.
Relying on the department’s national-level training platforms for hernia disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease, the MDT concept is also incorporated into teaching and training. Through a standardized multidisciplinary collaboration model, the department achieves precise diagnosis and individualized treatment of complex general surgical diseases and continuously improves the quality of treatment for difficult and critical illnesses and the standardization of diagnosis and treatment.
【Information on the Full-Course Management Service Model for Disease-Specific Care】
The Department of General Surgery focuses on major diseases, including thyroid and parathyroid diseases, hernia and gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastrointestinal tumors, bariatric and metabolic diseases, and inflammatory bowel disease. It has established a closed-loop, full-course disease-specific management service model covering screening and assessment, precise diagnosis and treatment, minimally invasive surgical intervention, perioperative rehabilitation, and long-term follow-up.
The department implements disease-specific group management by subspecialty, establishes standardized disease-specific records for patients, and completes multidimensional baseline assessments involving imaging, pathology, molecular findings, and metabolism. Based on each patient’s individual circumstances, it formulates a treatment plan involving endoscopic or robotic minimally invasive surgery, open surgery, or comprehensive conservative treatment.
The department fully leverages its technical strengths by performing multiple pioneering endoscopic thyroid procedures in China, various laparoscopic gastrointestinal and hernia repair procedures, and laparoscopic bariatric surgery, which was first performed in Fujian Province. It balances the radical nature of treatment with minimally invasive and cosmetic needs.
The department implements the concept of enhanced recovery during the perioperative period, strengthens preoperative education and nutritional intervention, and optimizes postoperative nursing and complication prevention and control. For patients with thyroid and gastrointestinal tumors, it conducts recurrence surveillance. For patients with hernia and gastroesophageal reflux disease, it carries out recurrence-risk prevention and control. For patients undergoing bariatric and metabolic treatment, it coordinates multidisciplinary long-term monitoring of metabolic indicators. For patients with inflammatory bowel disease, it ensures coordinated management between medical and surgical services.
Through continuous management across the entire care chain, the department changes the traditional model of “emphasizing surgery while neglecting follow-up,” thereby genuinely improving patients’ long-term prognosis and quality of life.
