Glaucoma Department (Department I)
The Glaucoma Department of Tianjin Eye Hospital was established in the 1960s. It currently has one chief physician, two associate chief physicians, and one attending physician. Professor Wang Sihui, a renowned glaucoma specialist, was one of the founders of this specialty. Over the past half-century, the Glaucoma Department has maintained a well-structured team of specialists comprising several renowned ophthalmic experts, members of specialty groups, and postgraduate supervisors. Under their guidance, young physicians, doctoral and master’s students, and physicians undergoing standardized residency training have jointly completed numerous clinical and basic research projects, and the department’s diagnostic and treatment capabilities rank among the leading in China.
Department Specialty
The department sees a large number of patients each year, including many patients from all over the country. From 2019 to the present, annual glaucoma outpatient visits have exceeded 60,000 patient visits, and annual surgical volume has exceeded 2,500 procedures.
Department Services
The Glaucoma Department performs all types of anti-glaucoma surgery and various laser treatments. It was among the first in China to perform combined glaucoma–cataract surgery. For conditions such as malignant glaucoma and various cataract-associated glaucomas, it was also among the first to perform combined trabeculotomy and trabeculectomy for congenital glaucoma, as well as diode-laser treatment for refractory glaucoma, among other procedures. In recent years, it has actively introduced and implemented new technologies, such as Ex-press drainage device implantation, 360° trabeculotomy, endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation, ultrasound cycloplasty (UCP), intraocular injection of anti-VEGF drugs combined with filtering surgery for neovascular glaucoma, and CO2 laser-assisted deep sclerectomy (CLASS), among others.
Department Equipment
The department has complete professional infrastructure and is equipped with a range of internationally advanced equipment for glaucoma diagnosis and treatment, including an A/B ultrasound scanner, an ultrasound biomicroscope (UBM), an international-standard fully automatic computerized visual field analyzer, anterior- and posterior-segment OCT, Angio-OCT, fundus photography, various laser treatment devices, and multiple tonometers: applanation tonometers, non-contact tonometers, dynamic contour tonometers, handheld applanation tonometers, rebound tonometers, and others.
Research and Innovation
In 2019, the department began performing CO2 laser-assisted deep sclerectomy (CLASS), a nonpenetrating glaucoma surgery, for patients with open-angle glaucoma. It successfully completed dozens of surgeries, with long-term observation and follow-up for 2-3 years confirming that the procedure was safe and effective; in 2020, it began performing ultrasound cycloplasty (UCP), an innovative noninvasive glaucoma treatment technique, for patients with absolute glaucoma and patients with refractory glaucoma after multiple glaucoma surgeries. It successfully completed dozens of surgeries, with long-term observation and follow-up for 1 year confirming that the procedure was safe and effective.
The department’s monographs published in recent years and the number of papers published at various levels; the department’s approved research projects and science and technology achievement awards obtained over the past five years; in total, the department has published 5 SCl papers and 10 papers in core journals.
