Orbital Diseases and Oculoplastic Surgery Department
Tianjin Eye Hospital’s Department of Orbital Diseases and Oculoplastic Surgery is a comprehensive specialty characterized by orbital surgery, medical management of orbital diseases, oculoplastic surgery, and the diagnosis and treatment of lacrimal drainage diseases. Under the guidance of Professor Song Guoxiang, founder of orbital disease studies in China and chief expert at Tianjin Eye Hospital, and under the leadership of Professor Zhao Hong, the academic leader, the department is committed to the surgical treatment and basic research of oculoplastic surgery, orbital surgery, ocular surface reconstruction, and lacrimal drainage diseases. It places emphasis on clinical practice, the accumulation of scientific research data, and the summarization of experience and lessons learned, and has established a medical model that organically combines the treatment of orbital tumors with oculoplastic surgery. All physicians in the Department of Orbital Diseases and Oculoplastic Surgery adhere to the principle of “patient-centered” care, continuously improve their personal qualities and professional capabilities, and work hard for the department’s brilliant future. Department Expertise The department has highly qualified professionals, including chief physicians, deputy chief physicians, and specialized technical personnel who have received professional training abroad. All current physicians hold doctoral degrees, and their level of clinical expertise is at the forefront. The department is at a nationally leading level in medical care, teaching, and research. Department Personnel The department currently has 2 chief physicians, 3 deputy chief physicians, and 1 attending physician, including 1 supervisor of master’s students and 6 holders of medical doctorates. Department Equipment As a key discipline of the hospital, the ophthalmology department has advanced diagnostic, treatment, and surgical equipment, including a 64-slice CT scanner, color Doppler ultrasound, ocular B-scan ultrasonography, and visual electrophysiology equipment. It has unique advantages in research areas such as ophthalmic imaging. The Lacrimal Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center has advanced examination equipment, such as a lacrimal endoscope and a nasal endoscope. The introduction of the lacrimal endoscope ushered in a new era of minimally invasive treatment for obstructive lacrimal diseases; it allows direct observation of the nature, location, and severity of lacrimal obstruction. Combined with lacrimal laser treatment and micro-trephine recanalization of the lacrimal passages, it achieves the treatment of lacrimal obstruction. Department Procedures Currently performed procedures include eyelid plastic surgery: correction of ptosis, upper eyelid retraction, eyelid tumor excision with primary eyelid reconstruction and repair, correction of congenital eyelid malformations and secondary eyelid plasty, ocular prosthesis implantation and repair of exposed ocular prostheses; orbital surgery: repair and reconstruction of various complex orbital fractures, surgical treatment of primary orbital tumors, secondary tumors of adjacent tissues, and orbital metastatic carcinoma, correction of enophthalmos, orbital socket reconstruction, and other procedures; individualized treatment of thyroid-associated eye disease, including orbital decompression and correction of eyelid retraction; ocular surface surgery: amniotic membrane transplantation, symblepharon lysis, pterygium surgery, conjunctival sac reconstruction, and other procedures; lacrimal surgery: endoscope-guided lacrimal laser recanalization combined with intubation, canalicular anastomosis, transnasal retrograde lacrimal intubation, traditional endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy, minimally invasive endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy, and other lacrimal procedures. Research Innovation In recent years, more than 60 papers have been published, including more than 10 indexed in SCI; the department has participated in compiling several monographs. Multiple staff members have participated in National Natural Science Foundation of China projects and undertaken hospital-level research projects and science and technology talent-training projects of the Tianjin Municipal Health Commission.
