Vitreoretinal Diseases Department (Division I)
Tianjin Eye Hospital’s Department of Vitreoretinal Diseases (Department 1) currently has 3 chief physicians, 2 associate chief physicians, and 8 attending physicians. Since 1982, under the leadership of Professor Wei Jingwen, a renowned ophthalmology expert, it has been one of the first in China to perform retinal detachment surgery under binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy and has trained a group of professionals who are highly skilled in fundus examination techniques and have extensive experience in treating fundus diseases. The current clinical team, led primarily by Professor Han Quanhong, focuses on minimally invasive surgical treatment of complex vitreoretinal diseases and ocular trauma, has conducted in-depth etiological research, and possesses highly proficient surgical techniques for vitrectomy treatment of retinal lesions associated with high myopia and complicated by macular holes, macular schisis, and retinal detachment. Departmental Expertise Tianjin Eye Hospital’s Department of Vitreoretinal Diseases (Department 1) adheres to clinical services as its foundation and scientific research innovation as its guide, with the goal of comprehensive development in medical care, teaching, research, and prevention, thereby promoting the continued development of innovative scientific research and the continuous improvement of the discipline’s clinical service level. Departmental Services It specializes in minimally invasive vitrectomy for macular diseases such as epiretinal membrane, macular hole, and vitreomacular traction syndrome; it uses a 3D surgical navigation system together with a ceiling-mounted light and bimanual vitreous surgery techniques to treat advanced diabetic retinopathy complicated by tractional retinal detachment and neovascular glaucoma, and has accumulated extensive clinical experience. It specializes in the combined treatment of vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment, and retinal lesions caused by complex ocular trauma, as well as the management of severe ocular trauma; it has extensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric retinal diseases, uveitis, and difficult vitreoretinal diseases. New Technologies In recent years, it has been one of the first in China to perform subretinal microinjection for the treatment of submacular hemorrhage and macular hole, suprachoroidal injection for refractory macular edema, and macular buckling using a self-invented buckling material. Uveal tumors have long been a forbidden area in ophthalmic surgery. In recent years, Professor Han Quanhong’s surgical team has been one of the first in China to apply vitreoretinal microsurgical techniques to perform local resection of intraocular tumors for the treatment of iris-ciliary body tumors, thereby saving visual function for a large number of patients and preserving the structure of the eyeball. Tianjin Eye Hospital’s Vitreoretinal Department 1 adheres to clinical services as its foundation and scientific research innovation as its guide, with the goal of comprehensive development in medical care, teaching, research, and prevention, thereby promoting the continued development of innovative scientific research and the continuous improvement of the discipline’s clinical service level. Scientific Research and Innovation In clinical research, the Department of Vitreoretinal Diseases (Department 1) has conducted studies on changes in scleral fibroblasts in pathological myopia and the promotion of scleral collagen cross-linking by glyceraldehyde. By analyzing the specific mechanism of Cdc25A-regulated PKM2 phosphorylation within the nuclei of mouse photoreceptor cells, it provides a theoretical basis for retinal metabolism-related diseases. It has continuously received funding support for multiple national-level and municipal bureau-level research projects. It has published a series of high-quality research papers.
