Anaesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesiology at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital is a key discipline in Zhejiang Province, a Health Commission specialist physician training base, a national ERAS standardized training and demonstration base, a painless endoscopy training base of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a target-controlled infusion technology training center of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, an inhalational anesthesia technology training center of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and a degree-granting site for master's and doctoral degrees in anesthesiology at Zhejiang University. The department has 117 anesthesiologists, including 23 physicians holding senior professional titles, 2 doctoral supervisors, and 6 master's supervisors. Clinical anesthesia services cover 80 operating rooms across 4 campuses, 35 non-operating-room anesthesia rooms (including cardiac catheterization and neurointerventional procedures, gastrointestinal ESD procedures, painless bronchoscopy, painless gastroscopy and colonoscopy, etc.), 80 anesthesia recovery beds, 67 preoperative preparation beds, and 2 centralized, information-based anesthesia assessment and patient education centers. The department routinely operates an anesthesia outpatient clinic.
Technical Strengths
The department has strong technical expertise and outstanding clinical capabilities, performing more than 140,000 surgical anesthesia cases annually. The total volume of Class III and IV surgeries ranks among the highest in the province, including anesthesia for heart, liver, lung, kidney, and combined multiorgan transplantation; anesthesia for complex cerebrovascular surgery; anesthesia for complex airway surgery assisted by a fiberoptic bronchoscope; anesthesia for complex cardiac and great-vessel surgery; anesthesia for robotic surgery; anesthesia for laparoscopic hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery; anesthesia for correction of severe spinal deformities and multiple joint replacement surgery; anesthesia for patients with severe multiple-organ dysfunction; obstetric anesthesia; and more. The department is equipped not only with world-class anesthesia and monitoring equipment, such as brand-name multifunctional anesthesia workstations, transesophageal (thoracic) Doppler ultrasound, thromboelastography (TEG), continuous cardiac output monitoring, cerebral oxygen saturation monitoring, and other modalities, but also has strong anesthesia expertise and widely implements perioperative ultrasound visualization techniques, hemodilution and autologous blood reinfusion techniques, labor analgesia techniques, and difficult airway management techniques. It also actively provides acute and chronic pain management and various painless diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, offering patients comfort-focused medical care. Our hospital's Department of Anesthesiology was among the earliest institutions in China to establish an anesthesia department-led acute pain service organization (APS), and specializes in using various analgesic techniques, especially ultrasound-guided nerve block techniques, to provide multimodal, individualized analgesic treatment.
