Ophthalmology
The Department of Ophthalmology of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, was founded in 1998 by Professor Yufeng Yao. After more than 20 years of development and construction, the department has become a clinical medical center integrating medical care, scientific research and teaching. It has established the Zhejiang Provincial Technical Guidance Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Corneal Diseases and the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Corneal Disease Research; it is a key innovative discipline of Zhejiang Province and the institution where the president of the Ophthalmologists Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Doctors Association is based. The department has 33 ophthalmologists, including 11 with senior professional titles. Its technical personnel structure is appropriately configured, and its subspecialty structure is complete. Its areas of strength include corneal disease, refractive disorders, refractive cataract and vitreoretinal diseases. The department’s professional scope covers all types of ophthalmic diseases. In the professional fields of corneal disease, presbyopia correction, laser refractive correction, ultra-high myopia correction, astigmatism correction, cataract, vitreoretinal disease, glaucoma, orbital disease and oculoplasty, it has outstanding technical expertise and advanced, comprehensive equipment, providing patients with comprehensive services for the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and optometric correction. It is one of the strongest comprehensive ophthalmology departments in Zhejiang Province. Technical Advantages Corneal Disease: The department has achieved breakthrough research results in corneal transplantation, ocular burns, ocular infectious diseases and other fields. It pioneered whole-bed deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty, took the lead in performing femtosecond laser-assisted keratoplasty, and developed new surgical treatment methods for ocular burns. It established new techniques for corneal transplantation treatment of severe fungal keratitis, new methods for fungal species identification, drug susceptibility testing technology and new drug-treatment methods for fungal keratitis, as well as nucleic acid testing technology for 8 viruses and artificial-intelligence-assisted diagnosis of corneal disease. These technologies are used to treat various corneal diseases, and its academic and diagnostic and treatment standards are at the international forefront. Refractive Specialty: The department was the first to propose the concept of lens-based refractive surgery. It was the first in China to perform trifocal intraocular lens implantation as an integrated solution for cataract and presbyopia, and is China’s first training center for trifocal intraocular lens presbyopia surgery. Its comprehensive correction of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia is at the leading domestic level. It was the first in China to perform full-femtosecond laser correction of myopia and astigmatism, and uses phakic intraocular lens ICL V4c implantation to correct myopia and astigmatism. Cataract Specialty: It is one of the earliest expert institutions in China to propose refractive lens surgery and implement integrated treatment for cataract and presbyopia correction. It routinely performs microincision cataract extraction by phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens implantation, toric intraocular lens implantation, trifocal intraocular lens implantation, extended-depth-of-focus intraocular lens implantation, phakic intraocular lens implantation for myopia and astigmatism, capsular tension ring implantation for subluxated lenses, and suspended intraocular lens implantation. It also performs anterior-segment lens phacoemulsification combined with posterior-segment vitrectomy, as well as high-difficulty “triple” and “quadruple” procedures involving corneal transplantation, glaucoma and vitrectomy. Vitreoretinal Disease Specialty The vitreoretinal disease specialty is at the forefront among its domestic peers. It has particularly extensive experience and superb surgical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy; macular diseases such as macular holes and epiretinal membranes; retinal vein occlusion; various complex retinal detachments; severe ocular trauma; and other difficult fundus diseases. It possesses the most advanced fundus examination instruments and surgical equipment in China, routinely performs external and internal approaches to fundus surgery, and performs minimally invasive vitreoretinal surgery, intravitreal injection and retinal laser photocoagulation. It is one of the earliest hospitals in Zhejiang Province to use the most advanced international anti-VEGF drugs and steroid implants to treat age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular edema, choroidal neovascularization and ischemic retinal diseases, greatly improving the visual prognosis of these patients. In collaboration with domestic peers, it has extensive clinical experience and advanced treatment techniques in hereditary vitreoretinal diseases, neuro-ophthalmology and uveitis. Orbital Disease and Oculoplastic Specialty It routinely performs all types of eyelid reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery and provides diagnosis and treatment for orbital diseases and strabismus-related diseases. Using cutting-edge international techniques, it develops individualized correction plans and adopts minimally invasive surgical methods to reduce trauma and accelerate healing. Its service scope is broad, ranging from eyelid repair to plastic surgery, comprehensively improving patients’ appearance and visual function, including but not limited to double-eyelid surgery, ptosis surgery, correction of eyelid laxity, epicanthoplasty, treatment of eye bags, trichiasis, eyelid masses, orbital masses, blepharospasm and extraocular muscle adjustment, as well as other surgeries and treatments.
