Surgical Oncology
Surgical Oncology was established on May 1, 2000. After more than 20 years of development, it has become a clinical discipline integrating medical care, scientific research, and teaching; it is a key department of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, an authorized doctoral degree-granting site in Oncology at Zhejiang University, and one of the national key disciplines. The department currently has 37 physicians, 1 department assistant, and 3 PI assistants. Of these, 7 are chief physicians and 14 are associate chief physicians. There are 2 doctoral supervisors and 6 master's supervisors. All physicians hold master's or doctoral degrees. The department collaborates with multiple internationally advanced breast treatment and research centers, including Loma Linda University in the United States, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia, MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States, The Ohio State University Cancer Hospital, Shizuoka Prefectural General Hospital in Japan, hospitals affiliated with the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, and Mayo Clinic in the United States. Surgical Oncology places great emphasis on the quality of medical care and implements quality control at every stage of the treatment process to ensure that patients receive the best possible, standardized, and safe treatment. This fully reflects our hospital's service philosophy: "Sincerity, confidence, and love for you." The department's specialties cover breast, thyroid, gastrointestinal, skin, and soft-tissue diseases, among others. After years of accumulation, the department has developed its own distinctive features in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and thyroid (parathyroid) tumors, and has established two leading subspecialties: breast diseases and thyroid diseases. Long-term follow-up records are established for all treated patients, and the department's level of tumor treatment is on par with national and even international standards. Technical Advantages Breast Subspecialty: In 2011, the department took the lead in establishing the Breast Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital. In 2013, it established a multidisciplinary team for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer (MDT), providing breast cancer patients with disease-centered multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment so that every breast disease patient receives standardized treatment in line with international standards. It was the first in the province to carry out breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer, sentinel lymph node biopsy, breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery, endoscopic breast surgery, and minimally invasive treatment of breast diseases, and remains at the forefront of the province. In recent years, the department has introduced a day-surgery model for breast tumors, enabling patients with benign breast tumors and some patients with early-stage breast cancer to undergo surgery and be discharged within 24 hours, greatly improving convenience for patients and reducing hospitalization costs. Since 2019, the department has collaborated with Professor Zhang Songying's team at our hospital's Reproductive Center to provide young breast cancer patients with one-stop fertility-preservation or ovarian-protection care, improving their quality of life. Thyroid Tumors: The department has always followed international guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer and, while adhering to standardized treatment, has actively explored and carried out minimally invasive treatment for thyroid cancer. Endoscope-assisted small-incision thyroid surgery is routinely performed in the department. Transmammary total endoscopic radical thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer and transoral thyroid surgery have enabled scarless procedures in the neck. In addition, a genetic-level screening and individualized treatment system for patients at high risk of thyroid cancer recurrence is being established. The department has also accumulated extensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors and superficial soft-tissue tumors. A multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment model for gastrointestinal tumors is routinely implemented in the department. At the same time, individualized diagnosis and treatment of patients with early gastric cancer using minimally invasive techniques combined with sentinel lymph node biopsy not only ensures treatment efficacy but also avoids overtreatment. In addition, the department has accumulated a certain clinical foundation in sentinel lymph node biopsy for melanoma and multidisciplinary-assisted comprehensive treatment. In recent years, the department has participated in or led more than 20 international and domestic multicenter clinical studies of the latest drugs or new treatment models for breast cancer. It has also actively explored translational research on breast cancer and thyroid cancer from both clinical and basic perspectives, accumulating a solid research foundation. Every year, the department organizes major continuing education programs, including the Surgical Oncology special session of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital International Academic Week, a breast minimally invasive treatment training course, a breast cancer MDT team lecture tour, and an advanced surgical short course on breast and thyroid tumors, promoting improvement in the regional level of breast disease diagnosis and treatment.
