General Practice
General Practice General practice is a comprehensive medical discipline oriented toward individuals, families, and communities, integrating clinical medicine, preventive medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and related humanities and social sciences. United Family Healthcare introduced the concept of “general practice” more than 20 years ago. From initially being composed entirely of expatriate general practitioners, Chinese general practitioners now account for half of the team, many of whom were trained through the United Family general practitioner training system. The international general practitioner team at Shanghai United Family Hospital has extensive clinical experience and multilingual communication skills. We are committed to basic community healthcare (family general practice), placing patients at the center and providing health and medical services for people of all ages in the community. A distinctive feature of United Family Healthcare’s primary care is that every patient has their own general practitioner (PCP primary care provider), who manages diseases and integrates prevention with treatment, with health as the goal. When complex problems arise, the general practitioner promptly makes referrals and coordinates seamlessly with specialists, helping patients obtain highly efficient and precise specialist treatment. Our areas of expertise include, but are not limited to: • Family medicine (all age groups)—from newborns to older adults; diagnosis and treatment of common diseases and acute conditions • Chronic disease management—hypertension, diabetes, thyroid diseases, gout, weight management, etc. • Women’s health—gynecological diseases, cervical cancer screening, menopause management, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis • Preconception and postpartum care—preconception planning, postpartum recovery, and breastfeeding guidance • Child and adolescent health—growth and development monitoring • Child and adolescent physical examinations—school-entry physical examinations (including physical examinations for admission to schools in China or overseas) • Personalized health examinations—tailored to the individual, with clear interpretation of results • Vaccination recommendations—in accordance with international standards • Sexually transmitted disease screening General Practice Service Locations General practice services are available seven days a week: Shanghai United Family Hospital Address: No. 699 Pingtang Road, Changning District, Shanghai Monday–Friday 8:00-18:00; Saturday–Sunday 9:00-17:00 Shanghai United Family Fengshang Clinic Address: No. 689 Yunle Road, Minhang District, Shanghai Monday–Friday 8:30-17:30; Saturday–Sunday 9:00-17:00 United Family Peiyuan Clinic Address: Unit 402, Yongyin Building, No. 85 Taoyuan Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai Monday–Saturday 9:00-17:00 Each Patient’s Primary Physician United Family Healthcare “Each Patient’s Primary Physician” Initiative: Frequently Asked Questions In January 2013, United Family Healthcare (UFH) officially launched the “Each Patient’s Primary Physician” initiative. This program was initially designed by the Center for General Practice and Education of United Family Healthcare Group to improve patient medical services. Why does United Family Healthcare assign a primary physician to every patient? A primary physician helps patients obtain effective and safe medical care by providing individualized preventive diagnosis and treatment recommendations and corresponding medical services. In responsible healthcare institutions and patients’ medical homes, family physicians play an important role in improving the standard of medical services. When patients identify a physician who they believe understands their medical history better, or a location where they believe it is easier to obtain high-quality medical care, they will receive more efficient healthcare services. United Family Healthcare is honored to have such a comprehensive medical team in its hospitals and clinics. These well-trained physicians and other healthcare professionals are well qualified to serve as primary physicians. This is a free service provided by United Family Healthcare Group to patients. Our goal is to improve the general practice system so that, with the assistance of healthcare professionals, patients can better understand the healthcare system and its processes, and coordinate timely access to specialist medical services. (Institute of Medicine. De ning primary care: an interim report.. Washington, DC: National Acad- emy Press; 1994.) What type of physician will my primary physician be? In some countries, primary physicians include general practitioners in the broad sense, as well as practicing nurses in internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, and general practice. At United Family, we recommend that a general pediatrician, general internist, or family physician serve as your primary physician. You may change your primary physician at any time; simply inform your doctor, nurse, or front desk receptionist of your decision. Must I see my primary physician before consulting a specialist? The process for patients to schedule appointments with specialist physicians within the United Family Healthcare system will not change. The physician who issues orders or makes a referral for you will inform you of the results and coordinate the referral. We recommend that you consult your insurance company to determine whether direct visits to specialists are reimbursable. What services will my primary physician provide? Although you may not necessarily be able to see your primary physician every time you visit United Family, other United Family medical personnel can communicate with your primary physician or the temporary substitute primary physician designated by them, enabling your primary physician to gain a more comprehensive understanding of your needs and follow your condition. For example, if you are admitted to the hospital, your attending physician during hospitalization will inform your primary physician about your hospitalization and what follow-up care will be needed after discharge. The primary physician program is an initiative of the Center for General Practice and Education of the General Practice Department of United Family Hospital’s Family Healthcare Group. We hope United Family Healthcare can become a model of comprehensive, effective, safe, and convenient healthcare.
