Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a provincial-level key clinical specialty in Shandong Province and the chairing institution of the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Alliance for Oral and Maxillofacial Repair and Reconstruction Technology. The Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Oral and Maxillofacial–Head and Neck Medical Biology is a key laboratory approved and established by the Shandong Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission. It maintains clinical cooperation and academic exchanges with leading domestic institutions, including the West China School of Stomatology of Sichuan University and the School of Stomatology of Peking University. Professor Zhang Dongsheng, academic leader of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, currently serves as Executive Dean of Shandong Provincial Stomatological Hospital, an academician of the International College of Dentists in the China Section, one of the “Top Ten Physicians” of Shandong Provincial Hospital, and a key young and middle-aged scientific and technological talent under the 1020 program of the Shandong Provincial Health Department. He also serves as an adviser to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association, deputy director of the General Dentistry Branch of the Chinese Stomatological Association, vice president of the Shandong Stomatological Association, director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Professional Committee of the Shandong Stomatological Association, and director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Branch of the Shandong Medical Doctor Association. He is an editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of General Medicine, the West China Journal of Stomatology, the Chinese Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and the Shanghai Journal of Stomatology. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery currently has 24 physicians and 25 nursing staff members; among them are 7 chief physicians and 9 deputy chief physicians, and 14 hold doctoral degrees. The department has two independently organized wards, with 83 available beds, an annual outpatient volume of more than 50,000 visits, and an annual surgical volume exceeding 4,600 procedures. It is one of the major oral medical, teaching, and research bases for oral and maxillofacial surgery in Shandong Province. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a comprehensive range of specialties and has distinctive subspecialties. It has subspecialties including comprehensive sequential treatment of oral and maxillofacial tumors, comprehensive sequential treatment of cleft lip and palate, corrective treatment of dentofacial deformities, treatment of temporomandibular joint diseases, treatment of oral and maxillofacial trauma, implant treatment for missing teeth, minimally invasive tooth extraction, and alveolar surgery. It has two distinctive specialty services: comprehensive sequential treatment of cleft lip and palate and an outpatient clinic for minimally invasive oral surgery. In recent years, the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has focused on comprehensive sequential treatment and repair and reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial tumors. With microsurgical tissue-flap repair, corrective treatment of maxillofacial deformities, repair of jaw defects with implant reconstruction, and radioactive particle implantation for malignant tumors as its distinctive strengths, it has driven the rapid development of clinical treatment. The level of comprehensive sequential treatment for oral cancer has remained a provincial leader, ranks among the national leaders, and is aligned with the international advanced level. The combination of CAD/CAM and computer rapid prototyping technology with tissue-flap transplantation to repair jaw defects; the use of 3D-printed titanium materials to repair and reconstruct maxillary defects after surgery for maxillary tumors; 3D-printed individualized templates to guide radioactive particle implantation; surgical navigation and molecular fluorescence-assisted mandibular reconstruction; and digital orthognathic surgery have all been at the forefront of medicine. In 2021, the project “Construction and Application of a Precision Treatment and Functional Repair and Reconstruction System for Oral and Maxillofacial Tumors” won the Second Prize of the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. The department also took the lead in formulating the national expert consensus on a multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment model for patients with oral cancer complicated by systemic diseases. In recent years, minimally invasive tooth extraction and immediate implant placement with immediate restoration, among other techniques provided by the outpatient department of the Stomatological Hospital, have also achieved satisfactory therapeutic results and have been welcomed by all sectors of society. The department has advanced equipment, including LEIKA and Zeiss high-resolution surgical microscopes, the Shupusida S8800A nitrous oxide inhalation analgesia system, American Stryker and German Medicon micro-power equipment for jaw surgery, an American Stryker temporomandibular joint endoscope, and a Swiss implant motor. The annual surgical volume reaches more than 4,600 procedures, ranking first in the province and among the top in the same specialty nationwide. Major and difficult oral and maxillofacial operations account for more than 70%; more than 400 cases of comprehensive maxillofacial tumor treatment and tissue-flap repair are performed each year, with a flap success rate of more than 98%. In March 2012, our department’s technologies for combined craniofacial radical treatment of oral and maxillofacial tumors, craniofacial surgical correction of craniofacial deformities, and radioactive particle implantation for oral and maxillofacial malignant tumors passed the expert acceptance organized by the Ministry of Health and received the first batch of Class III technology certifications, signifying the highest level of clinical treatment. It was the only institution in Shandong Province to receive this certification. Affiliated hospitals of renowned institutions such as Peking University received the same certification during the same period, signifying that the field had reached an advanced domestic level. In recent years, the department has successively established the Shandong Provincial Innovation Alliance for Oral and Maxillofacial Repair and Reconstruction Technology, the Shandong Provincial Alliance for the Construction of a Science and Technology Innovation Platform for Oral Cancer Health and Medical Big Data, and the Shandong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty Alliance for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. These initiatives have improved the treatment of oral and maxillofacial tumors and the repair and reconstruction of tissue defects in our province and have promoted scientific and technological innovation and the transformation of achievements. In recent years, the department has undertaken 15 scientific research projects at the provincial level or above, won 2 Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards, and 2 Medical Science and Technology Progress Awards. Over the past five years, it has published 78 professional papers, including 55 SCI papers.
