Cardiac Surgery
The Department of Cardiac Surgery at Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1986 and is currently dedicated to minimally invasive coronary surgery and the surgical treatment of heart failure.
The Department of Cardiac Surgery at Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1986. After 30 years of perseverance through challenges, and through the painstaking efforts of generations of cardiac surgeons, it has grown into a renowned cardiac surgery center in Beijing and throughout China. At present, the department comprises a cardiac surgery ward, a cardiac surgery intensive care unit (ICU), and a cardiac surgery research laboratory; it is equipped with first-class equipment, including cardiopulmonary bypass machines, intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), extracorporeal membrane oxygenators (ECMO), artificial ventricular assist devices, bedside continuous venovenous hemofiltration machines (CVVH), and echocardiography systems, including probes for transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. It currently has more than 60 medical staff, including 2 chief physicians, 7 associate chief physicians, and 4 attending physicians.
Guided by the core philosophy of putting patients’ health first, the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Peking University Third Hospital continuously pursues technological innovation and progress while ensuring the best possible medical quality. To date, our department has pioneered in China the successful performance of a series of innovative techniques, including minimally invasive off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB), small-incision (minimally invasive) single- and multivessel coronary artery bypass grafting, “hybrid” coronary revascularization combining interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery, implantation of artificial heart-assist devices, heart transplantation, endovascular stent treatment of thoracic aortic disease, and totally thoracoscopic minimally invasive cardiac surgery. It has gradually developed into a clinical specialty encompassing all the subspecialties of cardiac surgery, with minimally invasive coronary surgery as its leading focus and various minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures as its technical hallmark, including cardiac valve surgery, aortic surgery, arrhythmia surgery, correction of congenital heart disease, and surgical treatment of heart failure.
At present, the Department of Cardiac Surgery and its collaborating team perform more than 1 000 operations annually, ranking among the leading centers in Beijing. The cumulative volume of small-incision (minimally invasive) single- and multivessel coronary artery bypass operations ranks first nationwide, while off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting is at the forefront nationally. In recent years, the department has successfully performed the full range of cardiac valve operations and expanded minimally invasive procedures into other areas of cardiac surgery, including arrhythmias and congenital heart disease. It has also established a clinical base for the surgical treatment of heart failure and has successively carried out a series of novel operations targeting heart failure. As a pioneer of technological innovation in coronary surgery in China and a practitioner of minimally invasive cardiac surgery, we will remain focused on this mission and continue to provide patients with higher-standard, newer, and higher-quality medical services.
