Geriatric Medicine Department
Our department was established in 1987. At the beginning, it was named the Department of Internal Medicine for Senior Cadres; it is now named the Department of Geriatric Internal Medicine. It is a technically strong team dedicated to geriatrics, consisting of 23 doctors (including 2 chief physicians and 9 associate chief physicians), 44 nurses (including 10 supervising nurses, 7 geriatric specialist nurses, 1 palliative care specialist nurse, and 1 nutrition specialist nurse), and 1 rehabilitation therapist. The department director is Zhang Fuchun, Chief Physician, who also serves as president of Haidian Hospital of Peking University Third Hospital; the deputy directors are Zhang Fan and Liu Huilin; the secretary of the department Party branch is Liu Huilin; and the ward head nurses are Guo Ying, Sun Hui, and Zhao Xiuwei.
Our outpatient services include the Senior Cadre Clinic (102 Clinic) and the Geriatric Internal Medicine Clinic. The Geriatric Internal Medicine Clinic is available at the main hospital campus and at the Central Party School Campus, Beifang Campus, and Northern Haidian Campus. The 102 Clinic mainly serves cadre healthcare beneficiaries holding a “102” card; the Geriatric Internal Medicine Clinic mainly serves patients over 60 years of age with common internal medicine diseases and offers specialist and general appointments. As the older population increases, our department’s outpatient volume increases year by year.
Our inpatient department has 3 wards. Wards 1 and 2 are located at the main hospital campus, and Ward 3 is located at the Central Party School Campus; there are 72 beds in total. It admits patients with common geriatric internal medicine diseases such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, arrhythmia, heart failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes, and has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating elderly patients with multimorbidity who have multiple diseases.
Our department provides palliative care. Palliative care beds are available in Ward 3 of Geriatric Internal Medicine; all of them are special-needs wards, admitting patients in terminal stages of disease and patients receiving palliative treatment.
Our department has a professional geriatric nursing team with extensive nursing experience caring for patients with malnutrition and patients with various indwelling tubes, including gastric tubes, urinary catheters, PICC lines, and other types of tubing.
Our department conducts comprehensive geriatric assessment in outpatient clinics and wards, comprehensively assessing, from multiple aspects, activities of daily living, cognitive function, fall risk, nutritional status, mental and emotional disorders, and risks associated with concomitant medications, and developing comprehensive treatment plans integrating treatment, nursing, and rehabilitation.
Our department collaborates closely with the Department of Sports Medicine and the Department of Orthopedics to assess and manage patients during the perioperative period. The project “Deep cooperation between departments to ensure patients’ perioperative safety” won the third prize of the Medical Safety Management Award of Peking University Third Hospital.
Our department advocates “treatment and nursing with warmth.” The department has a warm atmosphere and genuinely provides patient-centered medical services. It has repeatedly received awards including the Outstanding Management Team Award, the Quality Service Award, and the Award for an Advanced Department in Spiritual Civilization. We will certainly make every effort to promote the development of healthy aging and improve the quality of life of elderly patients.
