Radiation Oncology
In January 1999, Professor Wang Junjie was responsible for establishing the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Third Hospital. In April 2001, Peking University Third Hospital and Beijing Metallurgical Hospital signed a cooperation agreement to establish the Tumor Treatment Center, and the Department of Radiation Oncology was established at the same time, with Professor Wang Junjie serving as Director of the Center and Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology. From 2001 to 2014, the Tumor Treatment Center provided diagnostic and treatment services at both Metallurgical Hospital and the Party School campus of Peking University Third Hospital. In July 2014, the inpatient ward of the Department of Radiation Oncology was moved back to the main campus of Peking University Third Hospital. In 2016, the Laboratory of Tumor Radiation Oncology was established. The Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Third Hospital currently possesses the most advanced equipment internationally, including the Varian Trilogy linear accelerator, the Swedish Elekta Axesse linear accelerator, the Iris CyberKnife robotic treatment system, the Varian Halcyon linear accelerator, a Varian afterloading treatment machine, a complete set of equipment for radioactive particle implantation surgery, a wide-bore CT scanner, and a deep hyperthermia machine. These resources encompass all current treatment modalities in the field of tumor radiation oncology and enable the department to perform all mainstream technologies currently used in tumor radiation oncology. Over more than 20 years since its establishment, the Department of Radiation Oncology has been committed to discipline development and talent cultivation, gradually forming a comprehensive talent structure. It currently has 74 employees, including 4 chief physicians, 1 chief nurse, 6 staff members with senior associate professional titles, and 23 staff members with intermediate professional titles. The department has established eight specialized clinical groups: minimally invasive and ablative therapy; thoracic tumors and CyberKnife therapy; breast cancer and gynecologic oncology; urologic and gastrointestinal tumors; neurologic and head and neck tumors; hyperthermia and comprehensive therapy; proton, heavy-ion, and neutron therapy; and radiation therapy combined with immunotherapy and targeted therapy. At the same time, the medical, physics, treatment, nursing, and laboratory teams work collaboratively to conduct clinical work, making tumor radiation therapy systematic, precise, and specialized. In 2021, the Department of Radiation Oncology successfully entered the ranks of national-level key clinical specialty development programs. It is at the forefront of China's high-end tumor diagnosis and treatment field and possesses strong disciplinary strength and clinical capabilities. Since its establishment, the Department of Radiation Oncology has achieved remarkable results in scientific research. More than 160 papers have been published over the past three years, including more than 100 SCI-indexed articles. It has served as editor-in-chief of 9 monographs, including “Interstitial Brachytherapy with Radioactive Particles for Tumors” and “Interstitial Brachytherapy with Radioactive Particles for Prostate Cancer”. The department has undertaken multiple projects, including key research and development programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology, key projects, general projects, and young scientist projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, key projects under the Capital Clinical Characteristic Application Research Program, and projects funded by the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation. As the first principal investigator, Director Wang Junjie received the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation from the Ministry of Education, the Third Prize of Huaxia Medicine, the First Prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award (2020), and the Science and Technology Achievement Award of the Chinese Nuclear Society (2021). From 2015-017, he was elected Chair of the Radiation Oncology Professional Committee of the Beijing Medical Association, and in 2020 he was elected Chair of the Radiation Therapy Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. He was among the first in China to perform radioactive particle implantation therapy for malignant solid tumors, CT-guided techniques, and 3D-printing-assisted techniques, and was among the first to establish Chinese standards and expert consensus for radioactive particle therapy. He successively undertook dozens of national- and provincial-/ministerial-level projects, including major special projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, major special projects featuring the Capital's characteristics, and the Doctoral Program Foundation of the Ministry of Education. He has trained more than 30 master's and doctoral students and served as editor-in-chief of more than 10 treatment guidelines and monographs. As a corresponding author or first author, he has published more than 100 SCI papers in journals including JCO (IF 50.74), Molecular Cancer (IF 41.44), Seminars in Cancer Biology (IF 17.01), J Immunother Cancer (IF 12.49), Theranostics (IF 11.6), Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys (IF 8.01), and Cancers (IF 6.57). He has been invited multiple times to give lectures in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Mongolia. Since its establishment, the Department of Radiation Oncology has emphasized academic exchange and talent cultivation, holding more than 20 departmental academic lectures and journal club activities each year. It has held two Beijing Radiation Oncology Annual Conferences, 23 national training courses on particle therapy for tumors, 6 training courses on standardized comprehensive treatment of gynecologic tumors, and 1 urologic oncology training course. Each year, it accepts 4 cohorts of visiting physicians for advanced training and has trained nearly 3,000 clinicians from across the country. For more than 20 years, the Department of Radiation Oncology of Peking University Third Hospital has consistently upheld the concept of innovative development, followed and led trends in the development of the discipline of tumor radiation oncology, overcome numerous challenges, and persevered through hardship. Its treatment modalities have continued to expand, and the quality of patient services has steadily improved, making it a renowned radiation therapy center in China and worldwide.
