Pathology
The Department of Pathology of Peking University Third Hospital is a national key clinical specialty and one of China's major centers for the pathological diagnosis of difficult cases. Relying on the long-established Department of Pathology of Peking University Health Science Center, and through the diligent work and innovation of several generations of pathologists, it has developed into a leading discipline integrating teaching, research, and clinical services. After years of accumulated medical practice, the department continues to innovate to meet the growing demand for specialized medical services. It currently comprises 13 pathology subspecialties covering multiple human systems, including urological pathology, hematopathology, neuropathology, gastrointestinal pathology, pulmonary pathology, gynecological pathology, breast pathology, dermatopathology, endocrine pathology, soft-tissue and osteoarticular pathology, cytology, anatomical pathology, and molecular pathology. In 2004, the department became one of the first national continuing-education bases; in 2006, it was among the first selected as a Beijing standardized residency-training base for clinical pathology; and at the end of 2010, it was among the first selected for the National Key Clinical Pathology Specialty Construction Project.
The Department of Pathology has a well-structured team of professional physicians and a group of renowned pathologists from across China. It also has a professional medical-technology team covering conventional pathology, immunohistochemistry, special staining, ultrastructural pathology, fine-needle aspiration cytology, and molecular pathology platforms, providing strong support for clinical pathological diagnosis, teaching, and research. Its affiliated Molecular Pathology Laboratory was among the first clinical gene-amplification testing laboratories in China to receive certification from the Ministry of Health's National Center for Clinical Laboratories. It is also a demonstration laboratory of the National Health Commission's Pathology Quality Control and Evaluation Center (PQCC) and a key laboratory in Beijing.
At present, the department processes 90,000 histological samples, 65,000 cytology cases, 50 autopsies, 6,000 electron-microscopy cases, 7,000 consultations, and 6,000 molecular pathology tests annually. Integrating clinical work, teaching, and research, it is a nationally leading comprehensive clinical pathology discipline with systematic, standardized, digital, and information-based integration ranging from gross, light-microscopic, and electron-microscopic observation to immunohistochemistry and genetic testing.
