Nuclear Medicine
The Department of Nuclear Medicine at Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1972 by Professor Chen Man. After more than 50 years of development, under the leadership of Professors Chen Man, Yang Yongzhen, Zhang Yanyan, and Zhang Weifang, it has become a modern department of nuclear medicine with a comprehensive range of services, advanced equipment, and coordinated development in medical care, education, research, and discipline building.
The department currently has 25 staff members and a well-established team of medical, technical, and nursing professionals. More than 80% of the diagnostic physicians hold doctoral degrees.
In terms of hardware, the department currently has the most advanced positron and single-photon imaging equipment: 1 PET/CT unit, 1 PET/MRI unit, 2 SPECT/CT units, and 1 small-animal Micro CT/PET/SPECT unit. It has achieved information-based and digital management of nuclear medicine imaging, as well as self-service dispensing of diagnostic reports and imaging films.
Relying on its advanced equipment platform, the department can provide more than 50 types of nuclear medicine molecular imaging examinations. Positron imaging includes PET/CT and PET/MRI imaging with various molecular probes, including FDG imaging, such as PSMA, FAPI, somatostatin receptor, cerebral Aβ amyloid deposition, and myocardial metabolism imaging. In terms of single-photon imaging, the department can perform dozens of types of examinations, including brain, thyroid, parathyroid, cardiac, pulmonary, renal, bone, salivary gland, and gastrointestinal tract imaging. In addition, the department can provide various radionuclide therapies, including iodine-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism, strontium-89 treatment for bone metastases, and radium-223 treatment for bone metastases from prostate cancer. The department has completed more than 350,000 nuclear medicine imaging diagnoses and more than 10,000 radionuclide treatments. It can fully meet clinical requirements for nuclear medicine imaging examinations for various diseases and has developed a professional team specializing in the assessment of orthopedic diseases, hematologic malignancies, rheumatic and immunological diseases, prostate cancer, and others. The department has also established an advanced radiopharmaceutical synthesis platform, which will support the high-quality development of the department and the hospital.
The Department of Nuclear Medicine at Peking University Third Hospital is authorized to confer master's degrees in Imaging Medicine and Nuclear Medicine, and serves as a standardized training base for residents and a standardized training base for specialists. Several faculty members of the department have successively received such honors as Outstanding Teacher of Peking University Third Hospital, Third Prize in the Young Teachers' Lecture Competition, one of the Top Ten Residents of Peking University Health Science Center, and Third Prize in the Resident Case Presentation Competition.
