Radiology
The Department of Radiology of Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1958, at the very beginning of the hospital’s founding, by Professor Li Guozhen. After more than 60 years of development, under the successive leadership of five directors—Professor Li Guozhen, Professor Liu Gengnian, Professor Xie Jingxia, Professor Li Xuan, and Professor Yuan Huishu—it has become a modern medical imaging department with comprehensive capabilities, advanced equipment, and coordinated development in medical care, education, research, and discipline development. The department currently has 198 staff members, including 52 in the Diagnostic Group, 113 in the Technical Group, 12 in the Nursing Group, 17 in the Registration Group, and 4 in the Engineering and Secretarial Group. Of these, 10 hold senior professional titles and 15 hold associate senior professional titles. More than 90% of diagnostic physicians hold doctoral degrees, and 7 technologists hold master's degrees. In terms of hardware, the main campus of Peking University Third Hospital and all its branch campuses currently have 14 high-field MRI scanners of 1.5T or higher, 14 high-end CT scanners with 64 slices or more, 1 fully digital mammography X-ray unit, and 22 digital radiography systems (DR). The department has established PACS and RIS platforms covering the entire hospital and all branch campuses, enabling information-based and digital management of imaging, as well as self-service distribution of diagnostic reports and imaging films. As part of the hospital's group-based development plan, imaging equipment at the branch campuses is being successively updated and reconfigured. On the basis of its advanced equipment platform, the department can provide whole-body digital X-ray radiography, whole-body computed tomography (CT), whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and various interventional examination and treatment services. Over the past 10 years, the department's annual examination volume has increased steadily; in 2022, it provided imaging diagnosis and interventional treatment services to more than 960,000 patients. The department is at the forefront in China in the clinical application of multislice spiral CT and high-field MRI. It can perform routine CT and MR examinations of all body systems, as well as complex examinations such as neonatal and fetal brain MRI and MR arthrography, fully meeting clinical requirements for imaging examinations of various diseases. The department places great importance on medical quality and safety, continuously optimizes clinical workflows, and constantly improves examination protocols. In 2014, it added a quality control module (QC) to the RIS platform, enabling quality-control evaluation at every stage of the entire process from registration, examination, and diagnosis to result distribution. At the same time, it emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration and exchange, conducting MDT comprehensive diagnosis and treatment meetings and joint imaging review meetings with multiple hospital departments: the Pain and Oncology CT Interventional Outpatient Clinic, the Joint Respiratory Outpatient Clinic, the Joint Neurology Outpatient Clinic, and others. Based on patients' actual needs, in 2019 the department introduced a Radiology outpatient consultation service, greatly meeting the needs of patients and clinical teams for consultation on difficult imaging cases and on-site image interpretation. The Department of Radiology of Peking University Third Hospital is one of the first institutions in China authorized to confer master's and doctoral degrees in imaging. To date, it has trained nearly 200 doctoral and master's graduates, and several doctoral and master's students are currently enrolled. It undertakes year-round teaching of the Imaging Medicine and Nuclear Medicine courses at Peking University Health Science Center, provides advanced training each year to dozens of physicians and visiting scholars, and became one of Beijing's first standardized residency training bases in 2007; in 2016, it ranked first in the inspection of Beijing's standardized residency training bases. Since 2012, it has held the National Advanced Forum on Comprehensive Imaging Diagnosis and the Advanced Training Course on Musculoskeletal Imaging every year without interruption, and has organized multiple national-level and Beijing-level continuing education courses, greatly enhancing the department's academic influence. In 2011, the Department of Radiology was designated as the Beijing Key Laboratory of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Equipment and Technology. It has undertaken nearly 100 research projects under programs and funds including the National 12th Five-Year Plan Science and Technology Support Program, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Research and Development Program, national-level 863 Program projects and national-level 985 Program projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, the Beijing Capital Medical Development Research Fund, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, the Capital Clinical Characteristic Application Research of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Science and Technology, and the Science and Technology Beijing Hundred Leading Talents Training Project. It has repeatedly won major awards, including the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award and the Chinese Medical Award, and has obtained multiple research patents. It has published more than 780 academic papers in domestic and international core journals, including more than 150 papers indexed by SCI and EI, as well as multiple monographs and translated works; department members have participated more than 100 person-times in top-tier international and domestic professional conferences, including the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), and the National Annual Meeting of the Radiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and have delivered conference presentations.
