Medical Oncology
The Department of Medical Oncology of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, established in 1999, is one of the earliest oncology specialties established in Shenzhen. 1. Platform support: Shenzhen Branch of the National Clinical Research Center for Cancer; the Oncology GCP Specialized Group of the National Drug Clinical Trial Institution; a member institution of the Quality Control Center for Gastric Cancer and Colorectal Cancer of the National Cancer Center; in 2017 and 2024, it successively brought in Academician Yu Jinming’s oncology radiotherapy and chemotherapy research team from Shandong Province and Professor Shen Lin’s clinical research team from Peking University Cancer Hospital. 2. Teaching platform: National Standardized Residency Training Base for Radiation Oncology, standardized training bases for clinical oncology specialists of Peking University Health Science Center and Shenzhen. As a master’s graduate training site for Peking University, Shantou University, Shenzhen University, and Guangdong Medical University, a master’s and doctoral graduate training site for Southern University of Science and Technology, and a Peking University joint postdoctoral training station, the department has a teaching and research office for medical oncology. It currently has 2 doctoral supervisors and 5 master’s supervisors, and has trained more than 20 graduate students. 3. Research platform: Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Translational Research on Gastrointestinal Tumors and the Institute of Oncology of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital. There are 6 full-time research personnel. In total, 10 postdoctoral researchers have been trained. Over the past 5 years, the department has received more than 10 national, provincial, municipal, and ministerial-level grants, conducted 10 clinical research projects and more than 60 clinical trials, published more than 60 SCI articles and more than 20 articles in Chinese core journals, and led or participated in the development of 3 domestic guidelines/consensus statements. 4. Clinical care: The oncology wards consist of a general chemotherapy ward and a day chemotherapy ward, with 102 beds. More than 10,000 inpatient admissions and more than 30,000 outpatient visits are recorded annually. Human resources: The team has more than 60 members, including 20 physicians (nearly 50% hold doctoral degrees), 32 nurses, 1 postdoctoral innovation talent, 2 Shenzhen Category D talents in specially appointed positions, 4 Shenzhen Health Commission elite talents, 1 practical clinical reserve talent, and 2 Category C Peacock talents. 5. Academic standing: Member of the Oncology MDT Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; member of the Oncology Supportive and Rehabilitation Treatment Group of the Chinese Medical Association; vice chair of the Oncology, Oncology Supportive Care, Clinical Research, and Breast Diseases branches of the Guangdong Medical Association; chair of the Oncology Branch of the Shenzhen Medical Association; vice chair of the Breast Diseases Branch of the Shenzhen Medical Association; vice president of the Oncology Branch and the Immunotherapy Branch of the Shenzhen Medical Doctor Association; chair of the Chemotherapy and Nursing Special Committee of the Shenzhen Anti-Cancer Association; and vice president of the Shenzhen Society for Precision Medicine and Cell Therapy Technology. The department has a certain influence in the oncology community in Shenzhen and Guangdong Province and was a nominated hospital in the 2022 South China Oncology Department Reputation Ranking (Fudan version). Department service characteristics and advantages The Department of Medical Oncology of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, as an important center for oncology diagnosis and treatment in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, upholds the fine traditions of Peking University medicine, is based in Shenzhen and serves the whole country, and continues to explore and innovate in oncology diagnosis and treatment. With standardized, individualized, and precision oncology diagnosis and treatment as its goals, the department has developed distinctive disciplinary characteristics and significant diagnostic and therapeutic advantages. 1. A standardized multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment model The multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment model (MultiDisciplinary Team, MDT) holds regular multidisciplinary consultations, bringing together experts from surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, nuclear medicine, minimally invasive intervention, and other specialties to jointly discuss difficult and complex cases and develop the optimal diagnosis and treatment plan for each patient. It can systematically combine surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, and other treatment methods, fully leveraging the strengths of each specialty and improving diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes. Recently, on the basis of the traditional MDT, the department innovatively introduced and upgraded the Molecular Tumor Board (MTB) model. The MTB focuses on precision treatment decisions based on molecular pathology test results and consists of clinical oncologists, molecular pathology experts, medical genetics experts, bioinformatics experts, and others. MTB consultations target tumor patients with complex genetic alterations and, based on genetic test results, develop individualized precision treatment plans. They play an especially important role in rare gene mutations, analysis of drug-resistance mechanisms, and assessment of immunotherapy indications. 2. Cutting-edge precision medical technologies for cancer treatment Cutting-edge precision medical technologies for cancer treatment include: (1) Broad application of NGS next-generation sequencing technology: A complete process for interpreting NGS results and translating them into clinical practice has been established to ensure that test results can genuinely be converted into clinical treatment decisions. (2) Innovative application of organoid drug-sensitivity testing: By culturing three-dimensional organoids from patients’ tumor tissues, simulating the tumor microenvironment in vivo, and screening sensitivity to multiple antitumor drugs, this technology provides a new solution to the substantial discrepancy between traditional in vitro drug-sensitivity testing and clinical efficacy. (3) D~sense testing: Based on in vitro drug-sensitivity evaluation using primary living cells, the core technology originated at Karolinska Institute in Sweden and has successfully obtained CE Mark certification and IVD approval in Europe. Its core process uses high-throughput drug screening to co-culture primary cancer cells extracted from tumor patients with drugs in vitro, combined with AI image-phenotype analysis to achieve high-throughput screening. The current testing panel covers 180-240 drug combinations across cancer types, providing clinicians with reference data and dosage ranges before medication. (4) Leading advantages in clinical trials of new antitumor drugs: The department has maintained close, long-term cooperation with well-known pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions in China and abroad and has conducted multiple international multicenter and domestic clinical trials of new drugs. These cover Phase Ⅰ-Ⅳ clinical studies and involve various new antitumor drugs, including innovative targeted drugs, immune checkpoint inhibitors, antibody-drug conjugates (ADC), bispecific antibodies, and CAR-T, providing patients with more cutting-edge treatment options. 3. Patient-centered humanistic care While continually expanding the boundaries of cutting-edge precision diagnosis and treatment, the department always remains patient-centered, attaching equal importance to “living longer” and “living better.” It emphasizes whole-course cancer management, especially palliative and supportive care, with a focus on symptom control and improving patients’ quality of life: it has created a “National Nausea- and Vomiting-Free Demonstration Ward” and established a standardized system for the prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting; it has established a “Pain-Free Ward,” using standardized analgesic pathways and multidisciplinary collaboration to enable more patients to achieve “cancer without pain”; relying on the “Youth Civilization Unit” collective, it has formed a professionally skilled young core team with strong humanistic care; and it has innovatively launched a series of patient education and psychological support programs, such as “Self-Efficacy Fuel Station,” to help patients and their families improve their understanding of disease and their self-management abilities, achieving a transformation from simply “treating disease” to “whole-course care for body, mind, and spirit.”
