Sports Medicine
The Department of Sports Medicine of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital was established in 2007. In 2012, the Department of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation was formally established, with an independent inpatient ward and 45 beds. In 2018, the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Medical Center was established, with 72 beds. It has now developed into a specialized sports medicine department integrating surgical treatment of sports injuries with functional rehabilitation. At present, the department is a key medical discipline in Guangdong Province and is at the forefront nationally in the surgical treatment of sports injuries, sports rehabilitation, exercise prescriptions, medical support for sporting events, and public education on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries. The department currently has 37 medical staff members, including 10 physicians, 26 nurses, 15 physicians in training, and 1 medical assistant; 9 staff members hold doctoral degrees and 2 hold master’s degrees; 5 hold senior professional titles and 20 hold intermediate professional titles. Department personnel have repeatedly undertaken further training at renowned hospitals and educational institutions in China and abroad. The department is currently equipped with multiple state-of-the-art arthroscopic surgical systems, various arthroscopic surgical instruments, and sports injury rehabilitation treatment equipment. The department’s advantageous technologies and distinctive clinical services include: 1. Surgical treatment of sports injuries. Five specialized groups have been established: the Comprehensive Joint Group, Hip and Knee Group, Shoulder and Knee Group, Ankle and Knee Group, and Adolescent Sports Injury Group. Each group has prominent areas of expertise and provides specialized treatment for specific diseases. The department has 40,000 outpatient visits per year and performs more than 2,000 surgeries annually, ranking among the leading institutions in Guangdong Province. It has reached a nationally leading level particularly in complex procedures such as anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscal repair and transplantation, release of gluteal muscle contracture, shoulder joint dislocation stabilization, and extra-articular applications of arthroscopy. The department undertakes technical training for sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery professionals in South China. 2. Sports rehabilitation. The department serves as the deputy leader institution of the National Sports Rehabilitation Group and as the leading chair institution of the Shenzhen Orthopedic Rehabilitation and Sports Rehabilitation Specialty Alliance. It leads the development of an advanced domestic model integrating surgery and rehabilitation, and has established a one-stop diagnosis and treatment platform for sports injuries covering “prevention—conservative rehabilitation—surgery—early postoperative rehabilitation—return to sports.” 3. Exercise prescriptions. The department actively promotes exercise interventions for common chronic diseases and has opened Shenzhen’s first “Exercise for Health (Exercise Prescription)” clinic. It has been awarded the titles of “Shenzhen Pilot Demonstration Site for the Integration of Sports and Medicine” and “Shenzhen Public Education Base for Exercise for Health.” 4. Medical support for sporting events. The department undertakes medical support for international events such as the WTA Finals and the Shenzhen International Marathon, as well as medical support for sports injuries among national teams stationed in Shenzhen. At the same time, it trains outstanding clinical professionals in sports medicine and sports rehabilitation. 5. Public education on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries. With safeguarding the exercise-related health of the entire population as its mission, the department actively promotes knowledge about the prevention and treatment of sports injuries through various media channels and has been awarded the title of “Guangdong Province Public Education Base for the Prevention and Treatment of Sports Injuries.” In the future, the department will continue to promote the application of minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques in sports injuries and extra-articular conditions, adhere to the principle that function comes first, and use integrated management combining surgical treatment of sports injuries with functional rehabilitation to help patients return to society and sports as soon as possible. At the same time, it will comprehensively popularize scientific exercise knowledge, advocate the concept that exercise promotes health, contribute to the implementation of the Healthy China strategy, and promote new developments in nationwide fitness activities.
