Gastrointestinal Surgery
The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital originated from the hospital’s General Surgery Department. Upholding the fine traditions of the older generation of general surgery experts and forging ahead with innovation, under the leadership of its academic director, Director Lü Guoqing, the department is currently providing patients with high-quality, appropriate medical services through superb medical technology, up-to-date diagnostic and treatment concepts, and meticulous humanistic care. The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Gastrointestinal Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment Center currently has 76 beds. Its specialty coverage includes all major gastrointestinal surgical diseases and all emergency diseases treated by general surgery, including gastrointestinal tumors, metabolic diseases, anorectal diseases, hernias and abdominal wall diseases, and acute abdomen. It is a key force in safeguarding the gastrointestinal health of Shenzhen residents and people in surrounding areas. The gastrointestinal surgery medical team consists of 20 members, including 4 with senior professional titles, 3 with associate senior professional titles, 6 with intermediate professional titles, 2 with junior professional titles, 4 with doctoral degrees, and 1 postdoctoral fellow currently in a postdoctoral program. In addition to undertaking all emergency diagnosis and treatment in general surgery at the hospital, as well as routine anorectal and abdominal wall surgeries, the department has developed 4 specialty treatment groups with distinctive advantages based on its own strengths and disciplinary characteristics. 1. Gastrointestinal Tumor Enhanced Recovery Surgery Specialty Group Guided by the concept of enhanced recovery after surgery, this group has developed a gastrointestinal tumor surgical treatment system centered on minimally invasive surgery and optimized perioperative management, including optimized pain management, controlled fluid infusion, reduced use of tubes and drains, early ambulation, and early eating and drinking. On this basis, the group closely follows the development trends in minimally invasive surgery and possesses advanced equipment such as 3D laparoscopes and 4K high-definition laparoscopes. It performs new gastrointestinal tumor procedures, including transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME), reduced-port laparoscopic surgery, single-port laparoscopic surgery, and combined laparoscopic and digestive endoscopic surgery. 2. Gastrointestinal Tumor Comprehensive Treatment Specialty Group On the basis of surgical treatment, guided by the clinical oncology guidelines issued by the Clinical Oncology Collaborative Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network of the United States, and implementing the concept of comprehensive management and follow-up of patients with malignant tumors throughout the entire course of their disease, this group has established a comprehensive treatment specialty system centered on adjuvant chemotherapy and incorporating neoadjuvant chemotherapy, conversion therapy, palliative chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, with a wide range of approaches covering all first-line and second-line regimens. On the basis of perioperative treatment, the group provides comprehensive management and follow-up for chemotherapy cases and has extensive experience in medication use and compatibility, as well as in the management and rescue treatment of adverse reactions related to chemotherapy/targeted therapy drugs and diagnostic and treatment methods. The nursing team provides high-quality nursing services for nutritional therapy, wound healing promotion, stoma care, and intravenous therapy for oncology patients. 3. Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Specialty Group The group was among the first in Shenzhen to perform bariatric and metabolic surgery. It is currently a bariatric and metabolic surgery diagnosis and treatment center in Shenzhen with a high number of procedures performed, a full range of mainstream surgical techniques, and extensive experience in perioperative management and multidisciplinary comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. It also conducts comprehensive management, postoperative follow-up, and dietary guidance for obese patients, as well as public education on bariatric and metabolic surgery. The group has a solid foundation in basic research and clinical trials involving diagnosis, surgery, and medications. 4. Gastrointestinal Surgery Daytime Diagnosis and Treatment Ward In March 2022, the “Daytime Diagnosis and Treatment Ward” was launched to provide endoscopic surgical treatment and daytime diagnosis and treatment services for patients with gastrointestinal polyps, mild anorectal diseases, and mild hernias. Due to its simplified hospitalization procedures and shortened hospital stays, the “Daytime Diagnosis and Treatment Ward” has become an area of developmental strength in recent years. The operation of the “Daytime Diagnosis and Treatment Ward” in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery has not only reduced patients’ waiting time for hospital admission and for surgery and examinations, but has also simplified hospitalization procedures, shortened hospital stays, and reduced hospitalization costs. Relying on the “Three Famous Projects” in Shenzhen’s medical and health system, the team of Professor Ji Jiafu from Peking University Cancer Hospital regularly conducts specialist outpatient clinics and multidisciplinary discussions of complex and difficult cases at the hospital, while also regularly performing highly challenging surgeries. “Lead the way for the stomach and ensure lasting intestinal health.” The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery will continuously improve its diagnostic and treatment capabilities and standards, conduct and undertake high-quality clinical trials, and promote the coordinated development of medical care, education, and research, making its contribution to “eliminating human suffering and helping perfect health” and to the innovative development of China’s medical and health sector.
