Neurosurgery
The Department of Neurosurgery was established in 1999 and has now developed into a clinical department integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, and training. The Department of Neurosurgery currently has 62 medical and nursing staff members, including 5 chief physicians, 6 associate chief physicians, 9 attending physicians, and 1 postdoctoral fellow. Among them, 7 hold doctoral degrees, 9 hold master's degrees, and 7 have overseas study experience. There are currently 69 officially open beds, including 58 general ward beds and 11 neurosurgical ICU beds. In 2021, there were 14,144 outpatient visits, 1,627 discharged patients, and nearly 2,000 operations performed throughout the year. Clinically, the department is equipped with a large number of internationally advanced devices, including high-quality surgical microscopes, neuroendoscopes, neuronavigation systems, stereotactic instruments, neuroelectrophysiological instruments, and a dual-C-arm angiography system. The Department of Neurosurgery currently has four main subspecialties: neuro-oncology, cerebrovascular disease, functional neurosurgery, and the neurosurgical ICU. In neuro-oncology, our department performs all types of brain and spinal cord tumor surgery, including gliomas, meningiomas, pituitary tumors, acoustic neuromas, brain metastases, hemangioblastomas, craniopharyngiomas, hemangioblastomas, brainstem cavernous hemangiomas, schwannomas, chordomas, ependymomas, and others. We are particularly a leading department in Shenzhen in the diagnosis and treatment of gliomas. Neuro-oncology MDTs (multidisciplinary consultations), awake-anesthesia surgery, yellow fluorescence technology, and other approaches fully reflect individualized and precision medicine in neuro-oncology. In addition, our department has maintained long-term cooperation and exchange with Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, and is an officially designated studio of Professor Zhang Junting, who is honored as the “Number One Neurosurgeon in Asia,” enabling us to provide patients with high-level medical services nationwide. In cerebrovascular disease, our department comprehensively performs surgical and interventional treatment for cerebrovascular and spinal vascular diseases. We specialize in managing various complex and difficult cerebrovascular and spinal vascular lesions, including cerebral aneurysms, moyamoya disease, arteriovenous malformations, cerebral vascular stenosis and occlusion, and dural arteriovenous fistulas. In particular, our performance in cerebral revascularization bypass surgery, minimally invasive treatment of complex aneurysms, carotid endarterectomy, and interventional thrombectomy is among the best in Shenzhen. Our department is an officially designated unit of the National Advanced Stroke Center. In addition, the neurosurgical team of Professor Ling Feng at Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, is an introduced project under our department’s “Three Famous Projects,” greatly improving our department’s capabilities in the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular disease. In functional neurosurgery, we routinely perform microvascular decompression surgery for the facial and trigeminal nerves to treat hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia. Surgical treatment for diseases such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease is planned for subsequent implementation. In the neurosurgical ICU, there is a professional neurocritical care medical and nursing team, providing strong support for our department in performing major, complex, and difficult surgeries. The ICU also undertakes the treatment and rescue of critically ill patients with severe craniocerebral injury, hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage, extensive cerebral infarction, and other conditions. In the future, the Department of Neurosurgery will strengthen cooperation, exchange, and learning with hospitals possessing the highest national level of neurosurgery, improve the development of its subspecialties, promote comprehensive development in medical care, teaching, and scientific research, serve the vast number of patients wholeheartedly, and strive to develop into a high-level specialty.
