Rehabilitation Medicine
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital was established in 1998. It is a clinical department that integrates modern rehabilitation with traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation, combining medical care, education, and research. The department currently has 52 medical personnel: 14 physicians, 26 nurses, and 12 therapists, including 5 personnel with doctoral degrees and 6 with master's degrees. It currently occupies nearly 1,200 m² of clinical space, divided into outpatient and inpatient areas. It currently operates specialized outpatient clinics for cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage, acupuncture rehabilitation for facial paralysis, shoulder pain, gynecological conditioning and rehabilitation, exercise prescriptions for chronic diseases, temporomandibular joint rehabilitation, rehabilitation medicine, neurological rehabilitation, and other specialized conditions. The inpatient ward has 24 beds. It contains an exercise therapy area (PT), an occupational therapy area (OT), a traditional therapy area, a physical therapy area, an exercise rehabilitation room, a speech therapy room, a dysphagia treatment room, a cognitive therapy room, and a rehabilitation assessment room. It is equipped with various modern rehabilitation devices, including an isokinetic muscle-strength training system for the upper and lower limbs, an extracorporeal shock wave pain treatment system, a cardiopulmonary exercise testing and treatment system, a Norwegian SET suspension system, a U.S. digital elastic functional training system, a constant-resistance trackless training platform, a transcranial magnetic stimulation device (pulsed magnetic field stimulation device), a lymphedema reduction treatment system, a lower-limb CPM trainer, a language assessment and training system, a cognitive function assessment and training system, a super laser pain treatment device, a portable bladder capacity measuring device, a fully computerized three-dimensional lumbar traction bed, an SSP neuralgia treatment device, and other modern rehabilitation equipment. The department’s first academic specialty: establishing a modern rehabilitation treatment system aligned with international standards. Its principal advanced techniques include joint mobilization, myofascial release techniques, the Schroth method, myofascial trigger point therapy, MTT (Medical Training Therapy), CDT comprehensive decongestive lymphatic therapy, the Bobath method, the Kawahira method, PNF therapy, taping therapy, catheter balloon catheter dilation, IOE (intermittent oral eating), and videofluoroscopic swallowing examination. The department’s second academic specialty: inheriting and promoting traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation techniques. Its principal advanced techniques include scalp acupuncture, Fu’s subcutaneous needling, fire acupuncture, thread-embedding therapy, Qihuang acupuncture, spinal manipulation and tuina therapy, bloodletting therapy, and gua sha therapy. The department’s featured diagnostic and treatment services include: 1. Sports orthopedic rehabilitation. Prevention and treatment of sports injuries and repetitive-motion injuries, pain in the neck, shoulders, lower back, knees, and ankles, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, postoperative orthopedic dysfunction, and scoliosis. 2. Neurological rehabilitation. Stroke, facial paralysis, insomnia, headache and dizziness, deafness, and tinnitus. 3. Breast and gynecological rehabilitation. Nonlactational mastitis, acute mastitis, mammary hyperplasia, dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, preconception conditioning, assisted reproduction (thin endometrium, ovulatory disorders, etc.), pelvic inflammatory disease, postpartum rehabilitation (anterior pelvic tilt and rectus abdominis diastasis), and urinary leakage. 4. Others. Temporomandibular joint arthritis, intractable hiccups, urethral syndrome, constipation, simple obesity, and lymphedema. In the future, the department will set its development goal as becoming a first-class sports medicine and rehabilitation medicine center in China. It will use sports rehabilitation, exercise prescriptions, and the integration of sports and medicine as the three driving forces of the department’s development, while establishing a one-stop, full-platform diagnosis and treatment system for sports injuries covering “prevention—conservative treatment—surgical treatment—early postoperative rehabilitation—return to sports,” namely, an integrated “prevention—treatment—rehabilitation” platform for sports injuries. By fully leveraging the technical advantages of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment, relying on its strong reputation built over many years in treating conditions such as neck, shoulder, lower back, and knee pain, as well as post-stroke facial paralysis, the department will focus on improving the technical level and therapeutic efficacy of orthopedic rehabilitation and neurological rehabilitation, vigorously develop pain rehabilitation, breast and gynecological rehabilitation, postpartum rehabilitation, gastrointestinal rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and other services, and continuously meet the medical care needs of the general patient population.
