Pathology
The Pathology Department was established simultaneously with the hospital’s opening on August 8, 1999. It is a clinical medical-technical department integrating medical care, teaching and research, and is now a department for high-level hospital development. “Precision and accuracy, high quality and efficiency” is its quality policy. In May 2022 it passed the on-site assessment of the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) ISO 15189 and became the first pathology department in Shenzhen, the second in South China and the 15th nationwide to obtain this accreditation. This demonstrates technical capacity and diagnostic standards for examinations under international accreditation criteria and provides patients with more precise, efficient and homogeneous care. The department has 37 medical-technical staff with a rational structure: 3 senior, 7 deputy senior, 12 intermediate and 15 junior. It emphasizes talent development, maintains close exchanges with the Peking University medical system, sends staff to famous domestic and overseas institutions for further study, learns from diverse strengths and builds a high-quality team. It has advanced equipment: 5 fully automatic tissue processors, 4 embedding machines, 7 microtomes, 2 integrated automatic staining-coverslipping machines, 1 automatic coverslipper, 2 frozen-section machines, 4 automatic immunohistochemistry systems, 31 system microscopes (one for 11-person viewing, one for 5-person viewing and four for 2-person viewing), 1 fluorescence microscope, a pathology multimedia color image-reporting system, a pathology information-management system and other equipment; it also has complete molecular-testing equipment, including a first-generation sequencer, real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR and related equipment. The department is developing rapidly, with specimens increasing annually; routine pathology examinations exceeded 70,000 cases in 2021, ranking among Shenzhen’s top 2. Its scope has expanded from biopsy and cytology to special staining, immunohistochemistry, renal-biopsy pathology, bone-marrow pathology, in-situ hybridization, FISH, sequencing and other molecular pathology, achieving near-full coverage. It also performs advanced specialty techniques: bone-marrow pathology since 2004, improving hematologic-disease diagnosis; renal-biopsy pathology in Shenzhen since 2008, with the hospital’s renal-biopsy diagnostic volume ranking first in the city in 2021; and lymphoma pathology diagnosis. Director Yin Weihua was invited to participate in compiling the fifth edition of the WHO classification of tumors of the hematopoietic and lymphoid systems. Centered on patients and quality, and aiming to provide accurate, objective and timely laboratory diagnostic evidence for clinical diagnosis, disease prevention and treatment, the department will further expand pathology, strengthen laboratory management and quality control, build an automated, informationized, scientific and standardized modern laboratory, continue improving comprehensive technical capability, introduce new projects and methods, and better serve patients.
