Traditional Chinese Medicine
The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Peking University People’s Hospital was established in 1956. The hospital invited the nationally renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioners Xu Hengzhi and Sun Zhonghuan to establish the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine and serve as TCM consultants to the Hematology Specialty Group of the Department of Internal Medicine, pioneering the research and treatment of hematological diseases and becoming a model for the integrated treatment of diseases with traditional Chinese and Western medicine. After more than 60 years of development, the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine has continuously explored the integration of China’s traditional medicine and Western modern medicine in clinical diagnosis and treatment, and has now developed into a comprehensive department integrating distinctive TCM medical care, teaching, and research. Relying on the advantageous disciplinary platform of Peking University People’s Hospital, the department highlights a distinctive disciplinary model combining traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, and rehabilitation. It has gradually established a development framework for a hospital department of traditional Chinese medicine that focuses on integrated Chinese and Western clinical diagnosis and treatment of multiple internal medicine diseases represented by respiratory system diseases, features comprehensive treatment of stroke (cerebrovascular disease), osteoarticular conditions, and outpatient care for neurological injuries after chemotherapy for hematological diseases, and gives equal emphasis to Chinese and Western medicine across general medicine, including sleep disorders, spleen and stomach disorders, dermatological diseases, diabetes, tumors, and andrology and menstrual disorders.
At present, the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a Demonstration Unit for Traditional Chinese Medicine Work in General Hospitals Nationwide, a Demonstration Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing General Hospitals, and a Key Specialty for Brain Diseases designated by the Beijing Municipal Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
