Family Planning and Reproductive Medicine Department
The Department of Family Planning and Reproductive Medicine of Peking University People’s Hospital has a history of more than 30 years. In 1982, in conjunction with the national family planning policy, a family planning specialty was established within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and treatment of infertility was also initiated at a preliminary level. In 1996, a specialized outpatient clinic for infertility treatment was opened. In 1997, preparations began for the establishment of Beijing’s second reproductive medicine center, providing assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, and intrauterine artificial insemination, as well as laparoscopic and hysteroscopic minimally invasive surgical treatment for infertility. It was among the first institutions in Beijing to pass the Ministry of Health’s certification for qualifications in human-assisted reproductive technology and became a specialized medical institution approved by the Ministry of Health to provide human-assisted reproductive technology. In 2004, the Department of Family Planning and Reproductive Medicine was formally established.
After nearly 20 years of development, the reproductive medicine specialty has established an expert team that is dedicated to its work, highly proficient in clinical techniques, and continuously improving its research capabilities, with more than 40 employees. It has two specialty outpatient clinics, reproductive medicine and family planning, and more than 30 beds. It possesses advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities, including a laminar-flow purified embryo laboratory, a complete set of embryo-culture equipment, and micromanipulation workstations; a complete set of minimally invasive surgical equipment for infertility, including hysteroscopes, laparoscopes, and falloposcopes; and an automatic real-time dynamic hysterosalpingography system. It can provide systematic and standardized diagnosis and treatment for female and male infertility. Its diagnostic and treatment capabilities for common diseases such as tubal obstruction, polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility due to endometriosis, recurrent miscarriage, and male oligoasthenoteratospermia have reached a leading level in China. It can perform various assisted reproductive technologies, including in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (test-tube baby) and intrauterine artificial insemination. More than 2000 patients/treatments receive assisted reproductive treatment annually, with a pregnancy rate of over 40%. Minimally invasive infertility surgeries such as hysteroscopy and laparoscopy can be performed, with an annual surgical volume of nearly 1000 procedures.
As a traditional specialty, family planning has also undergone substantial development. The department performs surgical abortion, medical abortion, and intrauterine device insertion and removal, as well as painless surgical abortion under B-ultrasound guidance, and has gradually expanded the scope of family planning procedures to include hysteroscopic removal of residual or embedded intrauterine devices and laparoscopic tubal sterilization or tubal recanalization. Our department has completed a large number of family planning procedures for patients with hematological diseases from Beijing and throughout the country. In addition to managing various difficult family planning procedures referred from surrounding areas, such as high-risk abortion, difficult intrauterine device removal, and termination of pregnancy for scar pregnancy, it is also committed to promoting contraceptive measures after abortion, safeguarding women’s reproductive health, and reducing the incidence of infertility at its source.
Scientific research is conducted in conjunction with clinical practice to promote the development of clinical diagnosis and treatment. For example, relevant studies have been carried out on the abortion rate of medical abortion in early pregnancy and bleeding after medical abortion, and the findings have been used to guide clinical work, achieving relatively satisfactory therapeutic results. The Department of Family Planning has become an in-hospital clinical drug trial base, completing and conducting multiple clinical observations of contraceptives from China and abroad, bringing good news about contraception to women.
