Geriatric Dentistry Diagnosis and Treatment Center
The Geriatric Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Center of the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Nanjing University School of Medicine (Nanjing Stomatological Hospital) is a specialized service initiative launched to actively respond to the national call and further improve the healthcare experience of key population groups such as “the elderly and children.” It is also an initiative undertaken by the hospital, after being recognized as an “Outstanding Unit among Jiangsu Province’s Age-Friendly Medical Institutions” and a “Jiangsu Province Civilized Service Title for Respecting the Elderly,” to further establish a service system suited to older adults seeking medical care and facilitate access to care for older people. The center is located on the first floor of Building 1 and currently has 11 medical and nursing staff members, including 7 physicians: 1 chief physician, 1 deputy chief physician, 2 attending physicians, and 3 physicians; all hold postgraduate degrees from well-known medical schools in China. The Geriatric Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Center has young and middle-aged experts in endodontics, restorative dentistry, and oral surgery, who are skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of caries, pulpal and periapical diseases, defects of individual teeth and the dentition, missing teeth, and alveolar surgery. Oral problems in patients aged 65 and above can be assessed in consultation and treated within a single department; patients can receive fillings and extractions as well as dental prostheses. The center provides older patients with integrated, multidisciplinary professional diagnosis and treatment plans and a “one-stop” oral diagnosis and treatment service, reducing the need to travel back and forth between departments during treatment. To reduce pain during diagnosis and treatment, enhance comfort, and eliminate fear of dental treatment in older patients, the Geriatric Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Center is equipped with advanced devices, including a painless anesthesia treatment unit, a digital oral scanner, a root canal treatment microscope, an ultrasonic treatment device, a nickel-titanium motor-driven handpiece, and a warm gutta-percha obturation unit. It can provide more minimally invasive, microscopic, and digital oral diagnosis and treatment services, helping safeguard oral treatment for older patients.
