Pediatric Dentistry Department
The Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Stomatological Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University Medical School (Nanjing Stomatological Hospital) was established in 1993. Since its establishment, the department has developed rapidly and has now become one of the larger pediatric dental specialties in Jiangsu Province with a relatively high annual outpatient volume; it is currently a standing committee member unit of the Pediatric Dentistry Specialty Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association and a Nanjing Municipal medical clinical key specialty. The Department of Pediatric Dentistry is located on the sixth floor of the outpatient building; the decoration of the consultation rooms fully takes children’s characteristics into account and incorporates some cartoon elements, significantly reducing children’s dental fear and anxiety when visiting. The department currently has 22 physicians, including 4 chief physicians and 6 associate chief physicians; 18 staff members hold master’s degrees or above; and 1 standing committee member, 1 committee member, and 1 youth committee member of the Pediatric Dentistry Specialty Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association. The medical staff possess solid professional knowledge, rich clinical experience, and standardized operating skills, and constitute a team with a reasonable structure, strong professional capability, and distinctive specialty features. The department has repeatedly organized national- and provincial-level continuing education training courses, undertakes the teaching of master’s and undergraduate students in stomatology at Nanjing University Medical School, and is also a national-level standardized residency training base for pediatric dentistry. The department can normally carry out the technical items required of a Grade III-A stomatological specialty hospital. General technical items include: primary tooth root canal treatment, caries filling, pulp capping, vital pulpotomy of young permanent teeth, diagnosis and management of traumatic injuries to primary and permanent anterior teeth, permanent tooth root canal treatment, extraction of primary teeth, topical fluoride application, and pit and fissure sealing. Key technical items include: apexogenesis induction of young permanent teeth, space management of premature loss of primary teeth, guidance of occlusion, apexification induction of young permanent teeth, and extraction of impacted supernumerary teeth. The department also attaches importance to the development and application of new clinical techniques and has carried out a number of new techniques, such as: reattachment of fractured crowns of traumatized young permanent anterior teeth, early fixed orthodontic correction of malformations in the mixed dentition stage, MRC therapy, MTA apical barrier technique, orthodontic traction of impacted and unerupted teeth, restoration of primary teeth with prefabricated crowns, and revascularization of young permanent teeth, all of which have received wide acclaim from parents of young patients.
