Department of Operative Dentistry and Endodontics
The Department of Dental and Endodontic Diseases of the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School (Nanjing Stomatological Hospital) is a clinical department integrating medical care, education, and research. After more than 70 years of unremitting efforts by several generations, it is now a National Clinical Key Specialty, a Jiangsu Provincial Clinical Key Specialty, a Nanjing Key Medical Discipline and Clinical Key Discipline, and the Nanjing Dental and Endodontic Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center. The Department of Dental and Endodontic Diseases currently has 60 physicians and a complete professional talent structure, including 2 chief physicians, 12 associate chief physicians, 15 staff members with doctoral degrees or above, and 35 with master’s degrees. The department covers more than 2000 square meters and has 43 comprehensive dental treatment units, as well as internationally advanced instruments and equipment, including dental operating microscopes, nickel-titanium powered root canal preparation systems, CAD-CAM chairside systems, comprehensive ultrasonic treatment units, warm gutta-percha filling devices, cold-light tooth whitening devices, and laser oral treatment devices. The annual outpatient volume exceeds 150,000 visits, making it one of the more influential dental specialties in East China. The diagnostic and treatment scope of the Department of Dental and Endodontic Diseases includes caries, pulpal diseases, periapical diseases, combined periodontal-endodontic lesions, and various acute and chronic losses of dental tissues; the success rate of root canal treatment exceeds 90%. The subspecialty of cosmetic dentistry provides cosmetic dental restorations for tooth whitening, discolored teeth, malformed teeth, and dental tissue defects. The department’s featured programs, including microscopic root canal treatment, microsurgical endodontics, difficult root canal treatment, and digital chairside immediate restoration, have reached a nationally leading technical level. The department is well equipped and rich in talent. Its medical and nursing personnel are enthusiastic, meticulous, standardized, and rigorous in their services, earning widespread acclaim from society. It received the honorary title of «Most Trusted Department by the Audience» awarded by the Nanjing Medical Association for two consecutive years, was also named a Party Member Demonstration Post in Jiangsu Province’s health and family planning industry in 2017, and an Advanced Grassroots Communist Youth League Organization in Nanjing’s health and family planning system in 2018. While undertaking clinical medical tasks, the department has also led multiple national, provincial, and municipal scientific research projects and received multiple provincial- and ministerial-level scientific research achievement awards. It currently has 1 doctoral supervisor and 2 master’s supervisors, and undertakes teaching in dental and endodontic diseases and clinical supervision for seven-year and three-year postgraduate students majoring in stomatology at Nanjing University Medical School. It has also been designated by the Jiangsu Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission as a training base for advanced study by residents in oral medicine and a standardized residency training base for oral medicine, and has successfully held national- and provincial-level continuing education courses many times. Department experts have repeatedly been invited to give academic lectures at medical schools and clinical hospitals across the country.
