Optometry Center
Department Introduction and特色: The Optometry Center was established in October 2023 and is a dynamic young medical team. The department’s optometric expertise is based on the theories and methods of specialist optometry developed by Director Niu Yan, reaching a relatively high level nationally and aligning with the world’s leading optometric diagnosis and treatment. The department adopts scientific management, fostering a conscientious and responsible work ethic among all physicians and focusing on providing patients with personalized diagnostic and treatment techniques and high-quality medical services. The department currently has 20 medical and nursing staff members, including 2 chief physicians (including 1 externally engaged expert), 2 deputy chief physicians, 2 resident physicians, 6 optometrists, 3 vision-training rehabilitation therapists, and several experienced opticians. The optometry specialty focuses on eye-health management. Relying on the optometry specialty, it follows myopia prevention and control (including orthokeratology lenses) and binocular-vision eye-health management as its main lines, and includes a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment model comprising myopia prevention and control, a contact-lens clinic, a near-work fatigue clinic, a pediatric ophthalmology strabismus and amblyopia clinic, high-myopia management, and eye-health management. The department mainly performs surgeries for strabismus and other conditions; diagnosis and treatment of various refractive errors; refraction and fitting; difficult refraction and spectacle fitting; myopia prevention and control management; rigid gas-permeable contact lenses (RGP); fitting of soft contact lenses; special contact lenses such as keratoconus lenses; orthokeratology lens fitting; management of contact-lens complications; presbyopia and progressive-lens fitting; diagnosis and treatment of pediatric strabismus and amblyopia; visual-function examinations and training; diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of low vision; outpatient screening for eye diseases; and treatment of dry eye in children. Each subspecialty group is equipped with personnel for training and rehabilitation, spectacle processing and quality inspection, special examinations, contact-lens education, and myopia-record management, providing patients with integrated services and safeguarding their eye health. Main Service Scope: The Optometry Center provides pre-examination triage, refractive examinations, eye-health examinations, formulation of diagnostic and treatment plans, optical “medication” fitting, and contact-lens fitting, particularly orthokeratology lenses, RGP lenses, and scleral lenses, for which it is at a leading level in the city. It also provides postoperative training after strabismus surgery and binocular-vision training, as well as a series of supporting services for myopia prevention and control and pediatric strabismus and amblyopia, including establishment of strabismus and amblyopia training records and adolescent myopia prevention and control records, serving patients with myopia, strabismus, and amblyopia. In 2024, the department was approved as a designated institution for pediatric low-vision rehabilitation training. Children aged 0–14 years with amblyopia, low vision, and other conditions within the greater municipal area can receive one year of government-subsidized training; children aged 6 years and under receive full subsidies. The Optometry Center is fully equipped with a range of professional devices, including imported refractors, an autorefractor, a slit lamp with an anterior-segment photography system, digital fundus photography equipment, retinoscopes, ophthalmoscopes, an autorefractor, a corneal endothelial microscope, a non-contact tonometer, a corneal topographer, a synoptophore, an optical biometer, an ocular-surface analyzer, and a dry-eye treatment device. It is also equipped with the latest optometric instruments, including an automatic lens edger (routine spectacles can be collected immediately), specialized strabismus and amblyopia training equipment, and relevant inpatient wards and operating rooms. 特色 of Surgical Services: Our department has maintained a long-term collaboration with the Eye Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University and routinely performs various types of strabismus surgery. These include difficult strabismus with postoperative recurrence, nystagmus, restrictive strabismus caused by thyroid-associated eye disease, paralytic strabismus, and various complex types of strabismus. An ideal surgical plan can be designed for each case, with good treatment outcomes. In addition, our department regards reducing the postoperative recurrence rate of strabismus as its ultimate goal. Through professional visual training, we help patients after strabismus surgery maintain binocular orthotropia for a long time and establish and improve binocular visual function.
