Ultrasound Medicine
| Department Overview |-------------- The Department of Ultrasound Medicine of Huashan Hospital was established in the autumn of 1959 and was one of the earliest ultrasound diagnostic departments established in China, developing almost in parallel with international medical ultrasound diagnosis (November 1958). Professors Pan Yonghui and Wu Xianghui were the department's founders and pioneers in the field of clinical ultrasound applications in China. The current department director is Professor Ding Hong. The Department of Ultrasound Medicine is distributed across several Huashan Hospital campuses, including the main campus and the Hongqiao, Baoshan and Pudong campuses. The department currently has 51 permanent employees, including 9 staff members with senior professional titles; 94% have master's degrees or higher. The department has always placed technological innovation at its core, actively cooperating with clinical specialties to promote the depth and breadth of clinical ultrasound applications. | Specialty Features |-------------- Clinical Diagnostic Technology It was among the first in China to perform intraoperative A-mode ultrasound-guided craniocerebral surgery, pyelography via renal pelvis puncture and renal puncture pyelography; and was the first in China to perform intraoperative ultrasound navigation in neurosurgery. It was among the first in China to perform the MAMMOTOME minimally invasive breast rotary-cutting technique and to use three-dimensional ultrasound to diagnose prostate lesions; it was also among the first in China to perform ultrasound diagnosis and treatment of peripheral nerves, tendons, ligaments and joints. The department currently offers a rich variety of services. In addition to routine ultrasound, its specialty services include: > Peripheral Nerve, Musculoskeletal and Joint Ultrasound Diagnosis and Treatment The department has always been at the forefront in China in ultrasound diagnosis and treatment of peripheral nerves, tendons, ligaments and joints. It works closely with the Hand Surgery Department and the Sports Medicine Department on multiple innovative projects, and has developed a distinctive ultrasound diagnosis and treatment model, particularly for the diagnosis and treatment of finger tendon injuries, peripheral neuropathies, foot and ankle conditions, knee-joint lesions and shoulder tendon injuries. > Abdominal Ultrasound Technology and Innovation In abdominal ultrasound, the department works closely with the Hepatobiliary Surgery Center of General Surgery, the Liver Transplantation Center, the Obesity and Hernia Surgery Center and the Department of Infectious Diseases. It focuses particularly on ultrasound and contrast-enhanced ultrasound diagnosis of hepatobiliary tumors, liver and kidney transplantation, and fatty liver; it has taken the lead in applying elastography and acoustic attenuation techniques to quantitatively diagnose cirrhosis and fatty liver, successfully achieving noninvasive assessment and greatly improving the accuracy of liver disease diagnosis. > Breast and Thyroid Ultrasound Technology Breast and thyroid ultrasound have always been areas of strength for the department. Through close cooperation with the Thyroid and Breast Surgery Department, it has successfully applied high-resolution ultrasound, ultrasound-guided puncture and minimally invasive techniques, providing strong support for the early diagnosis and precise treatment of thyroid nodules and breast tumors. > Intraoperative Ultrasound Navigation in Neurosurgery The department was one of the earliest units in China to perform intraoperative ultrasound navigation in neurosurgery. It also works with the neurosurgery team to advance the use of ultrasound in craniocerebral surgery. In particular, ultrasound guidance has significantly improved surgical precision and safety in the resection of difficult brain tumors. Specialty Groups The Department of Ultrasound Medicine has established multiple subspecialty groups according to clinical needs and professional directions, with clearly defined responsibilities and excellent technical expertise. > Abdominal Ultrasound Group Group leader: Ding Hong, Chief Physician Specializes in ultrasound diagnosis and interventional treatment of diseases of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and other abdominal organs. Particularly skilled in contrast-enhanced ultrasound and elastography for liver diseases. > Superficial Ultrasound Group Group leader: Xu Ping, Associate Chief Physician Specializes in diagnosing superficial-organ diseases, including breast, thyroid, lymph-node and skin lesions, particularly early screening and follow-up management of malignant lesions; applies contrast-enhanced ultrasound and elastography to accurately assess lesion characteristics. > Vascular Ultrasound Group Group leader: Wang Yong, Chief Physician Specializes in ultrasound diagnosis of diseases of the carotid arteries, the arteries and veins of the extremities, and the major abdominal vessels. Doppler technology is used to assess hemodynamics and provide comprehensive diagnostic plans for vascular diseases. > Musculoskeletal and Nerve Ultrasound Group Group leader: Cai Yehua, Associate Chief Physician Specializes in ultrasound examination of muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, synovium and peripheral nerve lesions. As one of the earliest teams in China to perform ultrasound diagnosis of sports injuries and peripheral nerve injuries, its technology is at an advanced domestic level. > Interventional Ultrasound Group Group leader: Lü Renhua, Associate Chief Physician Specializes in ultrasound-guided needle biopsy, cyst treatment, tumor ablation and other interventional diagnostic and treatment techniques. It has taken the lead in promoting minimally invasive treatment plans and provides efficient solutions for complex lesions. | Teaching |-------------- The Department of Ultrasound Medicine is a national training base for standardized residency training and standardized specialist-physician training in ultrasound. It recruits and trains ultrasound residents and specialist physicians nationwide. Residency training uses a one-to-one mentoring system. After three years of training, residents can independently perform ultrasound diagnosis of common diseases; the pass rate in the comprehensive graduation assessment for standardized residency training in Shanghai is 100%.
