Flagship specialty
Neurology Ward 2
Neurology Ward 2 has 12 doctors, including 4 chief physicians, 3 deputy chief physicians, 4 attending physicians, and 1 resident physician. Among them are 1 doctoral supervisor and 2 master's supervisors. The nursing team has 15 members. Since its establishment, the ward has adhered to a specialized and distinctive development direction. It has developed its own strengths in multiple fields. 1.Standardized diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular diseases: Neuromuscular diseases constitute a large group of neurological disorders. Most muscle diseases gradually progress, and if they are not diagnosed and treated in time, they can cause varying degrees of disability. Patients' mental and psychological well-being is often seriously affected, and severe cases may even be life-threatening, imposing a heavy burden on families and society. Therefore, early detection and precise treatment are very important. Our department has established a comprehensive neuromuscular disease examination system and was among the first units in Heilongjiang Province to carry out muscle biopsy projects, creating the neuromuscular pathology diagnosis technology platform of the Second Hospital of Harbin Medical University. It was the first in the province to establish a subspecialty outpatient clinic for neuromuscular diseases, carrying out scientific and standardized diagnosis and treatment for progressive muscular dystrophy, lipid storage myopathy, mitochondrial myopathy, myositis, and other diseases, thereby addressing difficult neuromuscular disease diagnosis and treatment problems in our province and surrounding areas. Neurology Ward 2 is currently a member unit of the “Alliance for Peripheral Nerve and Muscle Diseases in the Three Northeastern Provinces.” 2.Treatment and prevention of cerebral infarction: Ultra-early thrombolytic therapy is an important core component of cerebral infarction treatment. Our department was one of the earliest departments in the province to carry out ultra-early intravenous and intra-arterial thrombolytic therapy for cerebral infarction. With the development of technology, thrombolysis/thrombectomy and antithrombotic techniques have also become increasingly refined. The concept of “seek medical attention as soon as possible when ill” has gradually taken root. The number of patients with cerebral infarction who can reach the hospital for treatment within 3–4 hours after onset is gradually increasing, greatly raising the rate of thrombolysis/thrombectomy treatment. Many patients who were hemiplegic and aphasic on admission leave the hospital smiling and having regained their health. At the same time, we actively carry out screening and comprehensive prevention and treatment of high-risk factors for cerebrovascular disease. Every patient who has been hospitalized in our department receives detailed discharge instructions, regular follow-up examinations, and regular follow-up visits, significantly reducing the recurrence rate of cerebral infarction. 3.Rehabilitation after neurological injury: Our department has long been the leading unit of the Neurological Rehabilitation Committee of the Provincial Medical Doctors Association. We attach great importance to rehabilitation after neurological injury. The earlier neurological rehabilitation begins, the better the patient's prognosis. We work closely with the neurological rehabilitation ward, advocate static and dynamic assessments of rehabilitation, and provide comprehensive management combined with individualized rehabilitation treatment for recovery of the body and mind. We have established a platform for multidisciplinary collaboration so that rehabilitation treatment can be organically integrated into clinical specialties. 4.Prevention and treatment of dementia: As China’s aging population becomes increasingly prominent, the incidence of dementia is rising. Dementia severely reduces patients’ quality of life and imposes a heavy economic burden on families and society. In a sense, after developing senile dementia, patients often “return to childhood,” causing their relatives and caregivers unbearable distress; caregivers may even frequently develop anxiety and depression of varying degrees. Moreover, caregivers for patients with dementia are seriously insufficient, leaving family members feeling deeply desperate. Therefore, early identification of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, and determination of the type of dementia, can help delay disease progression. Our department has always insisted on conducting early dementia-related screening for elderly patients with cognitive impairment, discovering problems early and initiating drug and rehabilitation treatment early, thereby significantly reducing the disability rate among patients with dementia. 5.Standardized treatment of multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, Guillain-Barré syndrome, encephalitis, and myasthenia gravis These immune diseases in neurology have both similarities and differences in their treatment. Supported by advanced auxiliary examinations at our hospital, including evoked potentials, 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging, lumbar puncture and cerebrospinal fluid examination, and video electroencephalography, and combined with neuroimmune antibody and biochemical testing, we can make diagnoses as quickly as possible and begin standardized treatment as soon as possible. We carry out scientific and effective treatment with hormones, human gamma globulin, plasma exchange, immunosuppressants, and other therapies.
