The Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University has a long history; the department has a complete range of specialties and strong technical strength, and is renowned nationwide. Our department has an annual outpatient volume of more than 10,000 cases, has admitted and treated a large number of difficult and complicated diseases, and has accumulated rich clinical experience. The department now possesses advanced dental medical equipment such as imported comprehensive treatment chairs as well as a professional dental medical team. It has successively published more than 30 academic papers and obtained 1 general project of the Provincial Natural Science Foundation, 1 international cooperation provincial key research project, 1 project of the Provincial Health Department, 1 Provincial Youth Foundation, 1 hospital doctoral start-up fund and 1 hospital youth fund. It has been awarded 4 Heilongjiang Provincial Medical New Technology Awards, 1 Science and Technology Progress Award of the Provincial Health Department, 5 Medical New Technology Achievement Awards of Harbin Medical University, and 1 national patent. The department director, Professor Xie Xiaohua, has been engaged in clinical, teaching and research work in pediatric dentistry for many years and has presided over 1 National Natural Science Foundation project, 1 general project of the Heilongjiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation and many other projects; she has published more than 20 SCI articles and more than 30 articles in Chinese core journals, and has received multiple awards. Under the leadership of Professor Xie Xiaohua, the medical and nursing staff of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry actively carry out scientific research, attach importance to the translation of scientific research achievements, actively develop new medical technologies, and apply advanced technologies from home and abroad to clinical practice, relieving the suffering of a large number of patients. The scope of diagnosis and treatment of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry covers the prevention and treatment of dental caries in children; the treatment of pulp disease and periapical disease in children; painless minimally invasive treatment technology; the diagnosis and treatment of dental trauma in children; the diagnosis and treatment of developmental abnormalities of children's teeth, the elimination of bad oral habits in children and the diagnosis and treatment of early malocclusion; space management for premature loss of primary teeth; children's oral health management and the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases in children with disabilities, etc. The department attaches importance to early comprehensive prevention of children's oral health, establishes a standard oral health file for each child patient, carries out oral health care education, conducts regular oral examinations every 3 months to 6 months, continuing until the age of 18, and implements corresponding oral preventive and health care measures for children at different age stages, such as the application of fluoride for children (for example, fluoride protective varnish), pit and fissure sealing of primary teeth and young permanent teeth, preventive resin filling, etc. Through regular examinations, caries and developmental abnormalities can also be detected early and treated as early as possible, reducing children's suffering. At the same time, the Department of Pediatric Dentistry has developed a new medical technology — “oral comfort treatment under general anesthesia for young children, children with intellectual disabilities and children with dental phobia” — which is well received by the children's parents.
