Paediatrics
The Department of Pediatrics of the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University is a clinical secondary discipline integrating medical care, teaching, and research. In 2014, it was approved as a national standardized residency training base in pediatrics; in 2018, it was approved as a national standardized training base for perinatal medicine and undertook the teaching of Pediatrics at Hainan Medical University. It currently has 30 physicians in active service and 1 retired physician re-employed, including 6 chief physicians, 8 associate chief physicians, 9 attending physicians, 1 physician with a doctoral degree, 6 with master's degrees, and 1 supervisor of master's graduate students. Most physicians have received further training and study in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other places, and have extensive clinical experience. Several experts in the department hold positions in the pediatric branches of major academic organizations, including the World Association of Chinese Physicians, the Chinese Medical Association, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and the Chinese Medical Rescue Association, and serve as editorial board members of journals including Chinese Journal of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and the Chinese edition of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine; they also serve as deputy chairs, group leaders, and standing committee members of multiple medical societies/physicians' associations/study groups in the province.
The Department of Pediatrics currently has 100 open beds and approximately 40,000–70,000-plus outpatient and emergency visits annually. In addition to general outpatient services, emergency services, and a fever clinic, it also has several specialized subspecialty outpatient clinics, including pediatric asthma, neonatology, child healthcare and growth and development, pediatric rehabilitation, pediatric epilepsy, and neonatal care. Patients come from all cities and counties across the province and surrounding cities. The wards encompass multiple subspecialties, including neonatology, critical care, respiratory and digestive medicine, hematology and nephrology, rheumatology and immunology, neurology, child healthcare and endocrinology, and rehabilitation. The department has first-class diagnostic and treatment equipment, including advanced incubators, radiant resuscitation tables, noninvasive ventilators, conventional-frequency ventilators, high-frequency ventilators, transport ventilators, bedside EEG monitors, continuous blood purification devices, hemoperfusion machines, inhaled NO delivery devices, mild hypothermia therapeutic devices, electrocardiographs, defibrillators, blood gas analyzers, monitors, infusion pumps, micro-injection pumps, pulmonary function testers, and various bedside rapid-testing devices (PCT, ferritin, vitamin D), among others.
The department's diagnostic and treatment scope includes neonatology, respiratory and digestive system diseases, neurological diseases, pediatric hematologic and oncologic diseases, immune and renal diseases, endocrine and genetic-metabolic diseases, circulatory system diseases, various critical illnesses, and pediatric healthcare. Neonatology, critical care, pediatric healthcare, and hematologic oncology are specialty areas. It can provide diagnosis and treatment for various difficult and critical diseases, including genetic diagnosis, interventional treatment, and biotargeted drug therapy, among others.
Technologies already performed include: cardiopulmonary resuscitation, establishment and management of artificial airways, mechanical ventilation, continuous blood purification, deep venous and arterial catheterization, hemodynamic monitoring, thoracentesis and closed-chest drainage, electrical cardioversion and cardiac defibrillation, sedation and analgesia, total parenteral nutrition, disease severity assessment, early rehabilitation for children, prenatal diagnosis of thalassemia, biotargeted therapy, standardized chemotherapy, renal biopsy, synchronous exchange transfusion via peripheral arterial and venous access in neonates, video EEG monitoring, fiberoptic bronchoscopy for diagnosis and treatment, pulmonary surfactant therapy, the INSURE technique, inhaled NO therapy, pulmonary function testing, and other techniques.
Among these, continuous blood purification, inhaled nitric oxide, noninvasive cardiac function monitoring, transcutaneous carbon dioxide and oxygen partial-pressure monitoring, noninvasive exhaled nitric oxide testing, fiberoptic bronchoscopy for diagnosis and treatment, assessment of children's developmental quotient, and standardized diagnosis and treatment of pediatric asthma have all been newly introduced over the past three years.
