Obstetrics
The Department of Obstetrics of the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University is a Grade I Key Clinical Specialty of Hainan Province. Its clinical services cover all subspecialty fields of modern obstetrics, including general obstetrics, high-risk pregnancy, and fetal medicine. It is the Hainan Provincial Center for the Treatment of Critically Ill Pregnant and Postpartum Women, the first prenatal diagnosis center in Hainan Province, a National Standardized Residency Training Base, one of the first nationally designated painless childbirth units, a member unit of the South China Alliance for Acute and Critical Illnesses, a member unit of the South China Fetal Medicine Alliance, the lead unit for fetal medicine of the Hainan Genetics Society, the Hainan Prenatal Diagnosis and Fetal Medicine Haizhi Workstation, and a postgraduate training site and postdoctoral workstation. Through the tireless efforts of generations of obstetric staff, the Department of Obstetrics has established an integrated disciplinary system combining clinical care, scientific research, and teaching. In particular, it provides comprehensive, integrated services throughout early pregnancy, mid-pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period in obstetric emergencies and critical illness, precision diagnosis and treatment in tropical fetal medicine, and maternal-fetal management of multiple pregnancies. Its distinctive services have long been widely recognized by patients both inside and outside the province.
The Department of Obstetrics has a highly qualified workforce and advanced professional medical equipment. It currently has 66 medical and nursing staff members, including 13 deputy chief physicians (associate professors) or above. Its advanced equipment includes the GE E8 color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic system, Kaili mobile portable color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic system, radiofrequency fetal reduction system, Astria fetal medicine information system, and remote fetal heart monitoring system. There are currently 79 open beds, including family-style rooms, and three wards: the antenatal ward, Baby-Friendly ward, and fetal medicine ward. The department provides comprehensive systematic prenatal care, high-risk pregnancy management, remote fetal heart monitoring, genetic counseling for healthy reproduction, midwife outpatient services, childbirth education classes, rooming-in and integrated care for mothers and infants, and breastfeeding counseling. It provides 24-hour painless childbirth, free-position childbirth, doula-supported childbirth, family-accompanied childbirth, dedicated midwife observation and management throughout labor, and childbirth accompanied by neonatologists, with the aims of reducing the suffering of pregnant and postpartum women, lowering the cesarean-section rate, and safeguarding the safety of mothers and infants.
As the provincial center for the treatment of critically ill pregnant and postpartum women, the Department of Obstetrics has established and improved standards for the management during pregnancy and the perioperative period of pernicious placenta previa and placenta accreta. It conducts comprehensive preoperative assessments jointly with the departments of radiology, urology, vascular intervention, anesthesiology, and critical care medicine, and develops individualized comprehensive surgical strategies, including temporary balloon placement, ureteral stent placement, two uterine incisions, tourniquet-assisted combined hemostatic methods, and autologous blood reinfusion. These measures effectively reduce blood loss, the risk of allogeneic transfusion, and the hysterectomy rate, thereby ensuring maternal safety. Techniques including emergency cervical cerclage, screening and prevention of thromboembolic disease during pregnancy, anticoagulant treatment for prothrombotic states in obstetric diseases, and delayed delivery of one fetus in a twin pregnancy continue to rank among the leading level in the province and an advanced level nationally.
As the first prenatal diagnosis center in Hainan Province, the Department of Obstetrics has for many years performed umbilical cord blood sampling, multifetal pregnancy reduction, radiofrequency fetal reduction, and noninvasive diagnosis of fetal anemia through color-Doppler assessment of middle cerebral artery blood flow. These techniques remain at a leading level in the province and an advanced level nationally. By integrating clinical obstetrics with human genetics and imaging medicine, focusing on difficult fetal diseases, and relying on key laboratories, the department has established a multidisciplinary consultation model and become the provincial center for the diagnosis and treatment of difficult cases in prenatal diagnostic genetic counseling. The Department of Obstetrics has always maintained good cooperative relationships with many major medical institutions inside and outside the province. It continues to hold an advanced national position in genetic diseases and healthy reproduction, the reproductive prevention and treatment of thalassemia—the key genetic disease in Hainan—prenatal diagnosis and fetal medicine, and pathological obstetrics and healthy reproduction, while playing an indispensable role in practically addressing Hainan-specific genetic and reproductive-health issues.
