The Breast Disease Prevention and Treatment Center of Guangdong Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital was established in 1998. It is a multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment center centered on the Department of Breast Diseases and integrating internal medicine, imaging diagnosis, breast pathology, breast screening, and other disciplines. It is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases, translational medicine, and teaching. In 2006, it became a key discipline of our hospital; in 2009, it became a project unit of the Breast Cancer Prevention and Treatment Project of the Guangdong Maternal and Child Health and Well-being Project and the provincial technical guidance unit for rural breast cancer screening throughout the province.
The Breast Disease Prevention and Treatment Center has established the Department of Early Diagnosis and Screening of Breast Cancer, the Department of Clinical Treatment, and the Department of Research Support and Translational Medicine. The center has 47 staff members, including 10 chief physicians and 12 associate chief physicians; 91% have a master’s degree or higher; there are 2 doctoral supervisors, 7 master’s supervisors, 16 PhD holders, and 9 doctoral students currently enrolled; the breast department’s ward has 70 beds.
The Breast Disease Prevention and Treatment Center has 18 provincial- and departmental-level scientific research projects, has received 1 Third Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, has published more than 150 papers in Chinese core journals, and has compiled 7 monographs on breast diseases, including “Color Atlas of Intraductal Endoscopy,” “Modern Breast Oncology,” “Minimally Invasive and Functional Therapy of Breast Tumors,” and “Handbook of Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnostic Techniques.” Over the past ten years, it has hosted more than 20 national- and provincial-level academic conferences and trained more than 3,000 trainees from all over the country.
Taking “Early Prevention and Early Treatment, Stay Away from Breast Cancer” as its guiding principle, the center pioneered in China the “four-in-one technology for the early diagnosis of breast cancer,” consisting of mammography, breast color Doppler ultrasonography, ductoscopy, and percutaneous minimally invasive biopsy. Every year, the detection rate for ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast reaches 13–15%, and that for early breast cancer reaches 68%, placing the center at a leading level in China. It began relatively early to offer endoscopic treatment of breast diseases, breast-conserving and axilla-preserving surgery for breast cancer, one-stage and two-stage reconstruction surgeries, and other treatment techniques that are among the most advanced internationally; it pays attention to the postoperative psychological and physical rehabilitation of breast cancer patients and provides them with comprehensive guidance and humanistic care.
