Maxillofacial Surgery
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University was established in 1959. After more than 60 years of continuous growth and development, it has now become a center for the diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial diseases integrating clinical care, teaching, and research. The department is currently an institution for the recruitment and training of postdoctoral fellows and doctoral and master’s students; a National Standardized Training Base for Stomatology Residents; a key discipline in stomatology in Chongqing; a distinctive specialty department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University; the institution where Chongqing’s academic and technical leader in stomatology and the head of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Emergency Care Expert Group of the Chongqing Oral Medical Quality Control Center are based; and a member institution of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialty Alliance of the National Center for Stomatology.
The department has advanced instruments and equipment, including a Brainlab oral and maxillofacial surgical navigation system from Germany, a digital dental panoramic X-ray machine for curved-surface tomography, and CBCT. Focusing on the medical frontiers in China and abroad, the department continually develops high-end, high-precision, and cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment technologies. It is particularly adept at diagnosing and treating tumors of the oral and maxillofacial region and the head and neck, all types of oral and maxillofacial trauma, and patients with various difficult, severe, and critical conditions in oral and maxillofacial surgery, while aligning with international standards and developing in step with them. At the same time, by leveraging the advanced instruments and equipment available through the platform of a comprehensive tertiary Grade III Class A hospital, as well as the advantages of multidisciplinary consultations, it provides standardized diagnosis and treatment for oral and maxillofacial surgical diseases. The department has led or participated in formulating more than 10 expert consensus statements and guidelines on the standardized diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to oral and maxillofacial surgery. The department served as the chief editor of the book “Key Points for the Clinical Diagnosis and Principles of Standardized Treatment of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Diseases,” published by the People’s Medical Publishing House, and has promoted and shared its standardized treatment experience nationwide.
The department currently has 40 open inpatient beds. The outpatient department diagnoses and treats patients through nearly 30,000 outpatient visits each year, while the inpatient ward admits approximately 1,400 inpatients annually. During the 60 years since the department was established, it has diagnosed and treated more than 1 million outpatients and admitted more than 80,000 inpatients, accumulating extensive clinical experience in diagnosing and treating all kinds of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region and the head and neck covered by this specialty.
