Dentistry
The Department of Stomatology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University was established in the early 1950s and was the earliest specialized dental outpatient clinic in our city. After more than 60 years of continuous development, it has now become a dental treatment center in Chongqing integrating clinical care, teaching, and research. The department enrolls doctoral and master’s students in dentistry, undertakes multilevel teaching and training for undergraduates, interns, residents undergoing standardized training, graduate students, visiting trainees, and primary-level medical and nursing personnel, and is a national standardized training base for clinical dental residents.
The department currently has 13 employees, including 2 full professors, 2 doctoral and master’s supervisors, 3 doctoral degree holders, and 6 master’s degree holders; several physicians have previously undertaken advanced training abroad. The outpatient department has 15 comprehensive dental treatment chairs and includes subspecialties such as oral medicine, prosthodontics, and orthodontics. It receives approximately 40,000 outpatient visits annually, with patients coming from throughout Chongqing and the southwestern region of China.
The department has advanced hardware and software facilities, including root canal measuring devices, root canal treatment units, dental microscopes, imported dental implant equipment, a digital panoramic dental X-ray machine with curved-layer tomography, CBCT, and other advanced instruments and equipment. The department has standardized internal management, particularly in sterilization and infection control. It strictly follows sterilization standards and has established rigorous operating procedures to prevent nosocomial cross-infection. A system is implemented whereby each patient receives one set of disposable instruments, one handpiece, and one pair of gloves; all instruments undergo centralized high-temperature, high-pressure sterilization to ensure the elimination of all types of bacteria and viruses. Air, floors, and equipment surfaces are cleaned and disinfected regularly, completely preventing cross-infection and secondary contamination.
The department also provides convenient and patient-beneficial services, including online appointments and telephone follow-up. Drinking water, disposable cups, tissues, and other items are provided free of charge in the waiting area. Oral health education materials are distributed, and public lectures on oral healthcare are regularly held to raise people’s awareness of self-care.
The department provides all treatment services in every oral subspecialty, including treatment of dental and pulpal diseases, systematic treatment of periodontal disease and oral mucosal disease, prosthodontic treatment, dental implant treatment, orthodontic treatment, and related treatment for temporomandibular joint disorders.
Specialized diagnostic and treatment services include microscopic root canal treatment; apical surgery; aesthetic resin filling and restoration of tooth defects; sequential periodontal treatment; treatment of oral mucosal diseases; pulp-protective treatment and apex-induction treatment for young permanent teeth; splinting and vital-pulp preservation for traumatized permanent teeth; space maintenance after premature loss of primary teeth; early correction of malocclusion in children; clear-aligner and lingual orthodontic treatment; mandibular-advancement orthodontic treatment for adults with mandibular retrusion; minimally invasive inlay treatment for extensive tooth defects; minimally invasive full-crown restoration; conservative treatment for severe tooth defects; all-ceramic adhesive bridge restoration; porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, all-ceramic crowns, removable dentures, and precision-attachment restorations for missing teeth and missing dentition; suction-retained denture restoration for complete edentulism; prosthetic treatment for patients after maxillofacial tumor surgery; full-arch implant restoration; reconstruction techniques for severe hard- and soft-tissue defects; and pterygoid maxillary implant techniques.
Several physicians in the department serve as deputy chairpersons or committee members of the Chinese Stomatological Association and provincial- or municipal-level stomatological associations. Three teachers have been appointed experts for the development of the national question bank for the completion assessment of standardized resident training. The department has undertaken numerous national-, provincial-, and municipal-level research projects; multiple research projects have received awards; and more than 70 papers have been published in Chinese and international medical journals, including 13 indexed by SCI and 34 indexed by CSCD.
