Interventional Therapy Department
The Department of Interventional Therapy of the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University was established in 2001 and currently has 34 beds at the Changchun Road Campus, 15 beds at the Jinpu New Area Campus, 3 high-end DSA machines, a complete range of interventional treatment equipment, 19 physicians, professional medical research and nursing teams, and independent interventional wards, interventional operating rooms, and interventional outpatient clinics. After more than ten years of effort, it has developed into a pattern in which the various interventional treatment specialties for “neurological, vascular, tumor, and nonvascular diseases” advance in parallel. While completing its clinical work, the department also emphasizes talent development and academic exchange and has held, on multiple occasions, highly influential national academic conferences and national-level continuing medical education programs. In 2015, it successfully convened the 12th China Academic Conference on Interventional Radiology (2015CSIR); from 2012 to the present, it has successfully held 7 Dalian Cerebrovascular Disease Interventional Treatment Forums (DALIAN NEUROVASCULAR INTERVENTIONAL COURSE,DNIC), which have become one of the landmark academic conferences in the field of interventional treatment of cerebrovascular disease in northern China and have considerable influence in this field nationwide.
The Department of Interventional Therapy performs more than 2500 operations annually, and its total number of clinical cases reaches tens of thousands. In recent years, on the basis of rapidly strengthening its overall capabilities, the department has placed particular emphasis on innovation in technical concepts such as interventional treatment of intracranial aneurysms and 3D-printing-assisted treatment of aortic aneurysms, while continuously improving its systems for thrombectomy treatment of acute cerebral infarction and drug-coated balloon treatment of stenotic and occlusive lesions of the lower extremities, achieving breakthroughs in these areas. Director Wang Feng, a Standing Committee Member of the Neurointervention Professional Committee and Chair of the Peripheral Neurointervention Special Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a Standing Committee Member of the Interventional Physicians Branch and Deputy Chair of its Neurointervention Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Deputy Chair of the Interventional Professional Committee for Ischemic Cerebrovascular Disease of the Expert Committee of the National Health and Family Planning Commission’s Stroke Prevention and Control Project, and Secretary-General of the Stroke Prevention and Treatment Expert Lecture Tour Group, has vigorously led the department in building the relevant teams in the field of neurointervention. The department currently has 4 physicians qualified to independently perform thrombectomy surgery, enabling uninterrupted thrombectomy treatment around the clock. At the same time, by working jointly with teams from emergency medicine, imaging, neurology, neurosurgery, and other departments, it has opened a green channel and, supported by advanced technology, established a formalized, standardized, individualized, and sustainably effective set of treatment methods and processes. In 2017, the Department of Interventional Therapy successfully completed Dalian’s first operation for the treatment of an aortic aneurysm using 3D-printing-assisted stent fenestration, opening broad prospects for the surgical treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysms, abdominal aortic aneurysms, aortic dissection, vascular occlusion, and other conditions. In 2018, it successfully completed Liaoning Province’s first operation using the Pipeline flex flow-diverter device to treat an intracranial aneurysm; to date, the cumulative number of surgical cases has exceeded 30, greatly improving the prognosis of patients with giant and complex intracranial aneurysms. In addition, drug-coated balloon treatment of stenotic and occlusive lesions of the lower extremities—dilating the vessel with a balloon and applying the drug to the vessel wall to prevent restenosis—has also become a distinctive treatment program of the department.
All young and middle-aged physicians in the Department of Interventional Therapy hold master’s or doctoral degrees. While training a large number of postgraduate students for the country, the department has also trained a large number of physicians undertaking further education for primary hospitals. It actively conducts scientific research and has undertaken multiple national-level and provincial- and ministerial-level scientific research projects. Under the leadership of Professor Wang Feng, the department director and academic leader, the Department of Interventional Therapy continues to forge ahead and has become a nationally renowned department in its specialty, with diagnostic and treatment technology at the forefront nationwide.
