Vitreoretina
This specialty was established specifically for fundus diseases. Fundus diseases are a category of ophthalmic diseases with a high incidence, complex diagnosis, and difficult treatment. They include inflammation and tumors of the retina, choroid, optic nerve, and vitreous body; lesions of various blood vessels; various degenerative diseases; and ocular lesions caused by multisystem diseases.
This specialty is led by Professor Lin Shunchao, one of the “World’s Top 100 Ophthalmologists.” The foreign physician and vice president Nisite serves as department director. Its members include Professor Zhang Jingfa, a doctoral supervisor and associate chief physician; Lin Miaoli, PhD in Ophthalmology and associate chief physician; Tan Rongqiang, chief physician; and Zhang Haitao, associate chief physician, among others.
The specialty’s diagnostic and treatment services cover floaters, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, and fundus lesions associated with high myopia, among others. Treatment techniques include retinal laser photocoagulation, intraocular injection, and minimally invasive vitreous surgery. Corresponding diagnostic and treatment approaches are adopted according to the patient’s etiology and condition.
As a designated medical institution under the “Hong Kong and Macao Medicines and Medical Devices Connect” program, the specialty has successively introduced innovative drugs for the treatment of fundus diseases under the “Hong Kong and Macao Medicines and Medical Devices Connect” policy, including brolucizumab, faricimab, and Izervay, a new drug for geographic atrophy (GA), providing patients with more choices and more convenient services.
