Paediatrics
The Department of Pediatrics at Beijing United Family Hospital can provide your child with high-standard, high-quality outpatient and inpatient treatment services. Our pediatricians have extensive experience in pediatric care and treatment in China and abroad and can help prevent and manage various health problems in infants and young children, children, and adolescents. Children's health care has special needs, and they may often say little because they are too young or shy. Our medical staff have a deep understanding of children's physical, emotional, and social development. In addition, children often present symptoms that differ from those of adults and therefore require different medication and care approaches. Our doctors have received specialized training that enables them to recognize the importance of these differences, particularly in newborns and children. We provide children with a full range of services, including preventive care. We work closely with pediatric specialists in China and abroad, as well as with medical professionals from our Department of Psychological Counseling, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, and Pediatric Surgery Department, enabling us to fully assess children with special needs and recommend appropriate treatment methods. If needed, we can also help your child find affiliated specialist care services. All children get sick. Minor illnesses such as colds and coughs are common, especially among school-aged children, because being at school increases their opportunities to catch infections from other children. Children also commonly sustain minor injuries, which, like other health problems, need to be managed appropriately. If you are unsure whether your child needs to see a pediatrician, you can call our pediatric outpatient clinic for advice. Our office staff can usually answer your questions by telephone and, if necessary, arrange an appointment for you. If an in-person visit is not needed, our pediatricians or nursing staff can also provide reasonable advice by telephone. Please schedule a same-day outpatient appointment if your child has any of the following: Vomiting or diarrhea lasting several hours A rash, especially with a fever A cough or cold that has not improved over several days, or a worsening cold accompanied by a fever A wound that may require stitches Limping or an inability to move the hands or feet Ear pain accompanied by a fever, inability to sleep or eat, persistent vomiting, and severe diarrhea Fluid or pus draining from the ear canal A sore throat or difficulty swallowing Stabbing or persistent pain in the abdomen, including the stomach A temperature above 38 degrees (newborns less than two months old) Fever and vomiting occurring at the same time Not eating for more than one day Preventive health care services for children Regular checkups are key to preventive health care. Our pediatricians will examine your child. Through these examinations, pediatricians can: Determine the child's health status Track your child's growth and development Administer necessary vaccinations Prevent illness early and prevent conditions from worsening Provide information on children's health and safety Answer your questions Recommend child health checkups Recommended child health checkups Checkups during the first year after birth: 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months after birth Checkups during the second year after birth: 15 months, 18 months, and 24 months Early childhood: from 2 to 5 years, once a year Early school years: from 6 to 10 years, once every two years Adolescence and early adulthood: from 11 to 21 years, once a year Pediatric emergencies If any of the following symptoms occur, take your child directly to the emergency room: Bleeding that continues after 5 minutes of applying pressure to stop it Suspected poisoning A seizure (rhythmic convulsions and loss of consciousness) Progressively worsening difficulty breathing Blue, purple, or gray skin or lips A stiff neck or a rash accompanied by a high fever A head injury accompanied by loss of consciousness, confusion, vomiting, or pale skin Blood in the urine Blood in the stool Sudden generalized weakness or an inability to move Loss of consciousness or unresponsiveness Strange behavior, or increasing social withdrawal accompanied by reduced alertness Increasing pain or severe persistent pain A wound or burn that is large or deep, or is located on the head, chest, or abdomen A large burn located on the hand, groin, or face Infant head-shape correction services What should you do if your child's head has become misshapen from sleeping in one position? Beijing United Family Hospital now offers infant head-shape correction services to help you put your worries about your child's "flat head" behind you. Plagiocephaly refers to an asymmetrical skull shape in an infant and is an abnormal condition of head development, mainly caused by repeated pressure on a particular area of the infant's head. In addition to the more common plagiocephaly, other abnormal head shapes include asymmetrical brachycephaly, brachycephaly, and scaphocephaly. Positional correction therapy is one of the methods for early prevention and treatment of abnormal head shape. For infants aged 4 to 18 months with severe abnormal head shapes, if conservative treatment still does not improve the condition, the Department of Pediatrics at Beijing United Family Hospital can provide orthotic treatment with a helmet. This treatment has been used in some Western countries for nearly 30 years. The basic principle of helmet orthotic treatment is to provide a growth path for the skull as it grows in order to achieve correction. Beijing United Family Hospital uses an infrared scanner to scan your child's head shape first. If helmet orthotic treatment is needed, the scan data will be sent to a company in the United States to customize a helmet. After trial fitting and adjustment, pediatric medical staff will develop a follow-up plan for your child. For details about head-shape correction services or to make an appointment, please call the 24-hour service center: 4008-919191. Child behavioral and emotional development assessment clinic The period from 0 to 12 years of age is a critical stage of children's growth. As their bodies grow, children's various physical functions gradually mature. As a parent, you certainly want to understand your child's development comprehensively. You may also want to share and discuss your experiences and concerns about your child's psychological and behavioral development with a child life specialist and hope to receive the specialist's guidance and help. For example, why can't my child crawl yet? Why does my child always cry and fuss? Why does my child not want to go to school? Why is my child unable to concentrate? Why does my child have social difficulties? Why is my child so obsessed with games? Why does my child still wet the bed at this age? Why does my child stutter and speak unclearly? Children are constantly hindered by various problems as they grow and study, leaving many parents overwhelmed. Here, we have introduced high-standard assessment tools that have received recognition and recommendations from many parents, doctors, renowned child education and early intervention institutions, and people from many sectors! During the screening process, parents can interact with their children. The screening process is like a game, so children do not feel resistant, and parents can communicate effectively with the specialist. After the screening, you will also receive the specialist's guidance and recommendations regarding your child's development, as well as games and learning activities designed according to your child's age and developmental level, making it convenient for you to interact with your child at home and promote the development of your child's skills. For children who need it, we will also recommend further assessment and treatment. Child Life Program The Department of Pediatrics at Beijing United Family Hospital offers a Child Life Program that provides behavioral development services, including developmental, social, and emotional support, for children at different ages. We not only help children and parents adapt to and understand illness and treatment procedures, but also provide psychological support to help children cope with emotional distress from their families or schools. Through play, we create a friendly medical environment in which your child can relax physically and mentally. When should I seek help from a child life specialist? My child needs help coping with medical examinations, such as blood draws, physical examinations, intravenous infusions, MRI, CT, ultrasound, echocardiography, suturing, and fracture bandaging. My child has difficulty with medical procedures at home, such as taking medication or undergoing nebulization. My child has experienced physical and psychological trauma in a serious accident, such as a fall, cut, or traffic accident. My child would benefit from psychological counseling and intervention in preparation for surgery. I have questions about my child's developmental needs, such as social skills, communication, emotions, or attention. I need guidance on how to better talk with my child about the hospital experience. I need guidance on how to better help the siblings of an ill child answer questions about medical care. How is counseling provided? Medical play Child life specialists use medical play to help children adapt to the medical environment and help children and families cope with medical stress and pain. Surgery counseling From preoperative visits and medical play counseling about surgery to psychological support for surgery, we help children and families better understand and cope with surgery.
